Mexican, Brazilian trade ministers in DC to ask for Section 232 exemptions

The first priority for Brazilian officials in meeting with administration officials this week is a “push to remove Brazil from that list,” according to Alexandre Lyra, chairman of BSI.

They planned to emphasize to Ross and others that the U.S. steel sector relies on semi-finished imports from Brazil to run steel mills and that “more than 20 U.S. mills” depend on semi-finished steel from Brazil “to increase their competitiveness,” according a document obtained by Inside U.S. Trade that was prepared for this week’s meetings.

The future of second-generation biomass

Energy is a field, which Brazil and the United States have a lot to do together. By designing reliable equipment, improving automation and benefiting from their energy capabilities, both countries could reduce manufacturing costs and accelerate the development of the biomass industry.

"Second-generation feedstock is abundant, but prices on the biomass cost curve vary. Bagasse, available mostly in Brazil, China, India, and Thailand, is one of the cheapest sources of biomass: as a by-product of sugarcane processing, it is already aggregated at production plants and often burned to produce electricity. But 2G can be an alternative to drive value. American corn leaves and stalks cost about twice as much as bagasse, in part because this “stover” (as it is called) must be collected. Investors should seek long-term agreements to ensure security of supply in areas where the cost of sourcing is lowest."

To make bioconversion commercially competitive, the industry needs swift advances.
