The President Woodrow Wilson House is a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is a museum and event space located in the heart of Kalorama in Washington, DC. Book your group, private or specialty tour on our website. Edith and Woodrow Wilson moved into this house when they left the White House in 1921. It has been preserved for 100 years. Very little has changed, except

the conversation. Our tours, programs and events give a special glimpse into the private life of Woodrow Wilson while addressing his complex and consequential legacy. An honest appraisal of history helps us understand ourselves as a nation and as a people.

Swim on over to the Woodrow Wilson House this week to view our special "Shark Week" pop-up exhibition. The Original Shark Week was during President Woodrow Wilson's Administration!

In 1916, shark sightings and encounters were making headlines across the nation, sparking discussions in newspapers, scientific communities, and even at the White House and in cabinet meetings! Fun fact, there is notable evidence, and serious debate, that a Shark attack on the Jersey Shore (where Wilson enjoyed keeping cool in the summer) cost Wilson the state in the presidential election!

On July 4, 1918 President Wilson delivered a speech at George Washington’s tomb at the Mount Vernon estate, advocating for “the reign of law, based upon the consent of the governed and sustained by the organized opinion of mankind.” He characterized the ongoing WWI conflict as a continuation of the principles that George Washington and the Founding Fathers had fought so hard for during the Revolutionary War. The speech attracted an estimated audience of 20,000 people, which was the largest recorded crowd present at Mount Vernon until 2017!

In honor of Memorial Day. This World War II United States Army uniform belonged to Corporal Joseph F. John an enlisted army man who served with distinction during World War II. The shoulder sleeve insignia signifies WWI 27th Infantry Division, most likely from the Liberty Loan program conducted during the war; the chevron patches denotes the rank. The Army Combat Unit Patches are embroidered patches used by major formations of the US Army. Each formation has its own patch, and the US Army is unique among the armed services in that all soldiers are required to wear the patch of their headquarters as part of their military uniform. Corporal John’s uniform honors his service and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by millions and the enduring impact of World War I. This uniform is part of the Woodrow Wilson House permanent collection, and is currently on display at the museum.
It was featured in the recent Fashioning Power, Fashioning Peace exhibition. USA Government issued olive “foliage” green wool World War l uniform belonging to CPL Joseph F. John.

Join us for the inaugural Fashioning Power, Fashioning Peace Exhibition and Gala, happening on May 6, 2024, at the President Woodrow Wilson House. The event promises an unforgettable evening of elegance and an opportunity to support a meaningful cause with all proceeds going to the Wilson House museum.

For eight days only, the exhibition Fashioning Power, Fashioning Peace will showcase authentic clothing from more than 30 different countries, each symbolizing power, diplomacy, and cultural richness. The opening will be a celebration of cultural diversity, diplomatic history, and the powerful language of fashion.

In the heart of Embassy Row, come see fashion from around the globe in the museum, then step into the back garden for a celebration with a light buffet and beverages. Dress in your best “state dinner” or “traditional” attire and mingle with diplomats, politicians, fashion influencers, and the social elite of the nation’s capital.

This event coincides with the Met Gala in New York City, but only in Washington, D.C. can you truly understand how fashion has the power to create peace.
