This week after diving I thought that this would be a relevant topic to share about the importance of our oceans and how reliant people are on them.

“With every drop of water you drink, every breath you take, you’re connected to the sea. No matter where on Earth you live.”
-Sylvia Earle

I recently went diving among some of the amazing coral reefs of Indonesia. Their sheer beauty is beyond description, and their value is beyond calculation. But let’s try to put it in perspective. The World Wildlife Fund recently estimated that the total asset base of the ocean is valued at U…

More grasslands in Tibet could bring climate improvements

Sent in by Daniel Jay-Young Kim:

"Vegetation on the Tibetan Plateau has also increased as a result of global warming. However, in contrast to the Arctic areas, the longer periods of growth and the increased vegetation activity here appear to mean that global warming is being weakened."

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/08/150820082340.htm

In the Arctic, enhanced vegetation growth amplifies global warming. On the Tibetan Plateau, however, the situation is the reverse. “The trend in Tibet is the opposite of what we are seeing in the Arctic,” says an expert. “By restoring grasslands there, the climate can be improved – both locally and…

Up to 30 percent less precipitation in the Central Andes in future

Sent in by Alex Lintz:

"Seasonal water shortages already occur in the Central Andes of Peru and Bolivia. By the end of the century, precipitation could fall by up to 30% according to an international team of researchers led by the University of Zurich. In a first for this region, the team compared current climate data with future climate scenarios and data extending back to pre-Inca times."

Disastrous Sea Level Rise Is an Issue for Today's Public -- Not Next Millennium's

Dr. Hanson's paper goes beyond the conservative estimates of the IPCC, and while the predictions are not certain, policy makers need to be aware that this prediction is a possible scenario for the future. Sea level rise and other events, such as the drought in California, are going to get worse and policy makers can't continue ignoring the science.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-james-hansen/multi-meter-sea-level-rise-is-an-issue-for-todays-public_b_7875828.html

At some point, a scientist must say it is time to stop waffling so much and say that the evidence is pretty strong. In my opinion, we have reached that point on the sea level issue. We have a global crisis, an emergency that calls for global cooperation to reduce emissions as rapidly as practical.
