IACP Leadership in Volunteer Police Service Programs Award – Auxiliary/Reserve Police Programs

Moments ago, MPD was awarded the 2020 Leadership in Volunteer Police Service Programs Award! We are incredibly honored to be recognized.

This award is a testament to the dedication all members have serving the residents and visitors of our city. The efforts continue to set the bar higher and higher and are not going unnoticed.

"As one of the largest U.S. police agencies, the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has an impressive Reserve Corps whose volunteers have served the department since 1951. The Reserve Corps has 110 volunteers that are carefully selected, complete training that mirrors the career academy training, and become certified to serve as reserve police officers. The MPD Reserve Corps significantly contributes to the department and brings a variety of operational and specialty skills from their various backgrounds and careers. In 2019, the MPD Reserve Corps contributed over 30,900 hours of volunteer service to the department, authored 1,187 police reports, and made 198 arrests. MPD reserve officers are committed and dedicated to the department’s mission and serving the community to ensure public safety"

“What’s kinda compelling about being a reserve is it’s basically the definition of community policing... I take this uniform off and I go to work and I go home, and nobody knows that I do this.” #HeretoHelp #MPDReserveCorps #VolunteerPoliceOfficer

Sending condolences to our reserve colleagues out West.

The LASD is deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of LASD Reserve Forces Detail Deputy Ronnie Bollig. Deputy Bollig suffered a medical emergency on Wednesday morning, September 9, 2020. Ronnie is survived by his wife and his two sons.

Bollig graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Reserve Academy in 1983 and performed his duties with the highest professionalism at San Dimas Sheriff's Station. In 2000, he began his true passion for riding patrol motorcycles for the Sheriff’s Department and continued riding until his passing. Deputy Bollig served the people of the County of Los Angeles for 37 years.

Among his fine qualities, Deputy Bollig was a wonderful husband and father, a steadfast friend to so many, and a faithful and tenacious servant of this community. We mourn for Ronnie, his wife, as well as his sons, friends, and family.

His dedication and service to our department will not be forgotten.

It is with great sadness that we announce Officer Michael Ashley passed away this week. Officer Ashley was a Reserve Officer for many years before becoming a career officer and true leader in the department.

Officer Ashley served in the United States Marine Corps before joining the Metropolitan Police Department. He served in multiple prestigious units through the years. His family will remain in our thoughts for years to come.

Great work to all members, this award means a lot and we’re especially proud of the Reserve Officers who were recognized.

Earlier this year, the full-time members of the Special Liaison Branch (SLB) were recognized and honored to receive the Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) SHIELD Award. The volunteers of SLB, Reserve Officer Matthew Ashburn, Reserve Officer Derrick Dortch, and Civilian Auxiliary Sterling Spangler, were presented their awards by Chief Newsham, along with Assistant Chief Dickerson, Assistant Chief Green, Assistant Chief Contee, Executive Director Haiman, Executive Director O'Meara, and Director Czapary.
The SHIELD Award recognizes law enforcement for significant contributions towards protecting the American people from hate crimes, extremism, and domestic and international terrorism. SHIELD is an acronym for the core values of the profession: Service, Honor, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Dedication. These SLB volunteers exemplify these values.

I wish I could join, but my schedule just doesn't allow for that many weekends off for the academy.
Does DC have a real life superhero? DC Officer of the Year writes open letter to the community.
This event is started and run by a retired MPD Reserve. Sorry for the late notice, but being a weekday, we're coming up a bit shorter than usual for volunteers. We could use a few more. If you can help, inbox me. Thank you, in advance. ***************************************************************** Do you LOVE kids? Do you have a happy, upbeat personality? Can you be in Alexandria, VA this Thursday, May 16th to spend the afternoon/evening with us? Can you deal with a chaotic atmosphere for a few hours? If you answered yes to all of these questions, WE NEED YOU! :) For the NINTH year in a row, we are helping to stuff critters for the children who have lost a close relative in the line of duty, as part of National Police Week. We could use a few more volunteers. Inbox me.

My name is Cathy Burbrink, I have a friend who is 97 and was a DC police Reserveist in the 1940's. Today may be his last day here on earth and I was wondering if you have any volunteers for tributes at funerals. He will be buried at Lee funeral home in Clinton MD. Please call Velma Colfack at 240-441-5205 and let her know asap if this is the case. His name is James Ignatious Hill. Thank you four all your service. He is a dear friend.
