Change lives today

"You have empowered me to write new chapters of my life. And this has led me to empower others to do the same...I can never thank you guys enough. There was a time in my life when Free Minds was the brightest star shining. For this, I will always be grateful. My mind will always be free." - Free Minds member Stephen, in a letter from federal prison

For our incarcerated members, hearing from Free Minds can be a crucial source of joy, affirmation, and connection, especially after nearly two years of pandemic-related isolation. Donate before tomorrow night to support our members writing new chapters in 2022!

THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for #GivingTuesday this week. With our matching funds, we raised over $60,000 to expand our peer support program. We are so grateful for this wonderful community that makes our work possible. Free Minds member Carlos started training as a peer supporter in November. He said, "What I love about the Peer Support training is it lets us all recognize the trauma that prison inflicted on us and begin the healing process together so we can help those coming out behind us." Thank you for sharing the healing power of community with more Free Minds members coming home.

We are just one day away from #GivingTuesday! If we get the most donors from 9-10 AM EST, we could win an extra $1,000 for our new peer support program. Free Minds member Shannon summed up the significance of having peer support in reentry: “We understand each other. Our families might not understand us the way we understand each other. So as part of the self-care that’s necessary for us to thrive, to be the best that we can be, we need each other.” Thank you for supporting our members!

Shannon, Free Minds member and Advocacy and Leadership Development Specialist, spoke to DCist about the US Marshals decision to move 400 DC residents to USP Lewisburg in Pennsylvania.

Advocates say it’s disheartening to see such unprecedented action taken on jail conditions only after accused Jan. 6 insurrectionists have drawn attention to problems.

After prison he followed the rules, but a parole mishap delayed his full freedom

Check out this important NPR story about Free Minds member Robert Davis, whose release from supervision was delayed months due to a U.S. Parole Commission error.

We cannot afford mistakes that cost Washingtonians their freedom. It's time to end federal control over parole in DC!

Robert Davis' experience with the U.S. Parole Commission is an example of how systemic barriers can hold down people striving to do the right thing.

Incarceration wounds families: it loosens familial bonds, fractures a family’s economic security, perpetuates disadvantages, and causes severe relational distress. Today in the United States, 45 % of Americans have had an immediate family member incarcerated. Check out our newest blog on The Awake Space to read the story of one strong and resilient hidden victim, Keela Hailes, who lost her son Jermaine to incarceration when he was 16 years old.
Hello, my name is Ave and I am an Estonian. 17 years ago I lived and worked in Arizona at the Navajo Reservation in Holbrook. For quite a while now I've been longing to write down the memories of my beautiful Arizona adventure. Few days ago I finally started... To write a book and, through some miracle, to have it published, may take for years. That's why I have decided to start posting, along with my writing, this story. I am not an experienced author (yet), but I already have had positive feedback from my friends globally, still I would wish to reach for more audience because this story is not only about me, but also about Arizona and it's people and how two totally different cultures can find a mutual "language". But most importantly, it's about dreaming faithfully until your dreams come true... Thus, I hope you don't mind me sharing my Desert Rainbow link here:
Free Minds Book Club members that are 21 and younger would be perfect to participate in this virtual slam. The winner is awarded $200 and advances to the finals. Find more detail here.
