"Voting is fundamental to our democracy. The way we fully participate as citizens in that honored obligation is to vote."

Check out University of San Francisco MA in Public Leadership alum Kathryn Smith's op-ed on the importance of voting and voter access to our democracy.

I’m appalled by the MAGA House’s adamant desire to endanger the right to vote by attempting to pass the ACE Act, a bill that would make it much harder for people like me to vote.

"[Cavins] vows to keep pushing for pregnant active-duty women to have the support and options afforded to many of their civilian counterparts."

Gaby Cavins is a University of San Francisco MA in Public Leadership Craig Newmark Fellow and the executive director of the Military Birth Resource Network and Postpartum Coalition. Her story and advocacy are featured in this piece from The War Horse

Members of the military who are pregnant lack options when it comes to giving birth. That might be changing, but challenges persist.

"I sought this journey to gain self-confidence and a deeper self-understanding, and the Camino provided."

The MA in Public Leadership program at University of San Francisco is designed to prepare students for a career in public service, both by teaching practical skills and by giving students the opportunity to explore what a meaningful second service will look like for them. Congratulations to Paloma Greenwald for continuing this exploration outside of the classroom and for receiving her compostela!

Introducing Kellen Curry , a proud graduate of the US Air Force Academy who followed the footsteps of his grandfather and father in serving our country. The words of Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz have always resonated with him: "Lead them well." These simple yet powerful words reinforce the need for leadership we can believe in.
Curry's journey took him across Afghanistan, where he had the privilege of contributing to the restoration of peace and security in a volatile place. This experience was not without loss, as he remembers his fallen classmates whose memories will never fade. Curry also recognizes the paramount importance of national security and understands the need for leaders with experience and integrity to keep us safe.
With an incredible opportunity to work in our nation's economy during his time with J.P. Morgan, Curry gained a deep understanding of how the financial market underpins American economic growth. However, he couldn't ignore the economic anxiety faced by Long Islanders due to inflation, the cost of living, and fears of recession. Curry firmly believes that it is critical for Washington D.C. leadership to effectively serve the interests of the community and secure federal support for its people.

Introducing : Marine veteran, advocate for working-class families, and champion against corporate monopolies.
From a working-class neighborhood in Jefferson City, Kunce rose above financial challenges and excelled academically, becoming valedictorian at Jefferson City High School and earning a spot at Yale, which he funded through scholarships and community support.
Inspired by a local Marine Corps League hero, Kunce joined the Marine Corps to serve his community and country, deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Returning home, Kunce joined the American Economic Liberties Project, where he works to break the grip of monopolies on the economy, safeguard innovation, protect taxpayers, and empower small businesses. He is now running to be the next Senator from Missouri.

Today we highlight Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana’s 3rd District, a native Hoosier running for Indiana's U.S. Senate seat. Raised in a working-class family in Columbia City, Jim learned the power of hard work and the importance of manufacturing jobs to Indiana's economy. He became the first in his family to attend college, earning degrees from Indiana University and Grace College. His dedication to education and his roots in the community lay a strong foundation for his political journey.
As an Afghanistan veteran, he took a leave of absence from the Indiana State Senate to deploy during Operations Enduring Freedom and Freedom's Sentinel. His wife, Amanda, stepped up to serve in his place, showing their shared commitment to working for Indianans.
Now the elected representative for Indiana's 3rd congressional district, Congressman Jim Banks' leadership extends to critical areas affecting our nation's security and military preparedness as chairman of the Military Personnel Subcommittee on House Armed Services and member of the House Select Committee on China, and he is also a member of the House Committees on Education and Workforce.
Beyond his political career, Banks has served as the president of the Columbia City Rotary Club, chaired the Whitley County Republican Party, and contributed to the Whitley County Council and the Northeast Indiana Workforce Development Board, reflecting his commitment to the well-being of his constituents and the betterment of his community.

Happy to announce our new series highlighting veterans running for office!

Starting off strong with Ruben Gallego, Representative for Arizona’s 3rd District. Born to immigrant parents from Colombia and Mexico, he fought against the odds, supporting his family with jobs as a janitor, line cook, and meat-packing plant worker during high school. Gallego went on to earn a place at Harvard University and took on odd jobs to finance his education.
After Harvard, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and deployed to Iraq as an infantryman. Gallego's military service inspired him to pursue public office, aiming to ensure that our troops are never sent into harm's way without a clear plan and the support they deserve. From leading initiatives in Phoenix to serving in the State House and later Congress, he has fought for veterans and working families in Arizona.
In Washington, Gallego has become a leading, trusted voice on national security. As the highest-ranking Latino on the House Armed Services Committee and Chairman of the Intelligence and Special Operations Subcommittee, he has overseen critical operations and authored budgets securing billions to defend our nation.

HELP US TELL THE STORY OF HOW VIRGINIA ENDED VETERAN HOMELESSNESS - VOTING ENDS FRIDAY AT MIDNIGHT

A good friend has submitted a proposed panel - "Can Data End Veteran Homelessness? Ask Virginia" to South by Southwest (SXSW) that would elevate the issue of veteran homelessness and help other states and cities follow in Virginia's footsteps to ending it. The proposal is currently in the running for SXSW 2018. And YOU can help us get it across the finish line!

South by Southwest is an innovation-focused cross-sector conference and festival, which USA Today called “one of the largest and most influential gatherings on the planet.”

Community votes make up 1/3 of the final score that determines whether this panel gets selected. So if you think this is an important issue, please take two minutes to vote!

Voting is open until Friday, August 25. And it is very easy!

Could you please help?

Step 1: Register with South by Southwest, here (https://auth.sxsw.com/users/sign_up).

Step 2: Vote here for "Can Data End Veteran Homelessness? Ask Virginia" (http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/78483)

If you voted for a proposal last year, then you are already registered and just need to log in to vote!
