Friends of Bloomingdale/LeDroit Park Dogs Follow us on Twitter: @bldpadogs This Facebook Group is maintained by the Bloomingdale LeDroit Dog Park Association (BLDPA). We are a non-profit organization made of community residents.
(1)

BLDPA is tasked - through a Memorandum of Understanding with the DC Dept. of Parks and Recreation - with managing and maintaining the dog park in LeDroit Park. For example, we clean up poop when you forget to, we empty the dog park trash cans when the city forgets, we provide the poop bags for use in the park, we enforce the city's rules for dog parks, we sponsor community building events for dog owners in our neighborhood and we sponsor training events, among other things. You can support us by becoming a paid member, volunteering for an event or becoming a Dog Park Ambassador.

Mission: We are committed to building a sense of community and increasing safety in Bloomingdale & LeDroit Park by establishing and maintaining a dog park at Gage-Eckington.

Please pass along.

To our furloughed community, we understand more than most that accidents and emergencies have a way of happening at the worst possible time. While the government remains closed, we are waiving our emergency exam fee and offering deferred/extended payment options for furloughed Federal employees and contractors.

Hey neighborhood dog owners! The dog park in the Park at LeDroit needs your help.

Every dog park in DC must have a community group that advocates on behalf of the dog park with the DC gov and handles basic maintenance tasks. If you are a regular user of the dog park, please consider volunteering some of your time.

There is a small group of volunteers already working on some projects, but we need your help! Things on our radar:
regular park clean-up and weeding days;
providing poop bags in the dispensers;
making the dog park safe for small dogs;
dog-friendly happy hours;
and, fundraising for a shade structure.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jack Gillum at jgillum [at] gmail.com.

How to Stop Your Dogs Annoying Humping Behavior | Whole Dog Journal

"The stress and excitement of meeting other dogs is a classic cause of mounting, and one of the reasons you are highly likely to see the behavior on display in dog parks. Brief bouts that involve mounting of other dogs in canine social interactions – as long as they don’t lead to bloodletting or oppression of the mountee – are acceptable. Mounting of human body parts is not acceptable, nor is mounting that leads to dog fights."

So why do dogs hump? Reproduction aside, the most common reason dogs hump things is in response to stress, anxiety, and/or excitement. A trainer friend of mine tells of a friend coming to visit a friend who lives far away, visits rarely, and who is well-loved by my trainer friend s dog, a pit bull-m...

The Humane Rescue Alliance is there to help if you can no longer take care of an animal but they should never have to receive an animal this way. Please reach out to them if you have any info about the owner.

The Humane Rescue Alliance is offering a $3,000 reward for information identifying the owner of a small dog left outside of the New York Avenue adoption center Wednesday evening. The dog was in a basket, double-bagged, with the bags tied shut, with a note stating the dog was dead. Upon inspection by HRA officials, the dog was alive, but suffering from multiple ailments.

“We are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the person responsible for this heinous act” said HRA’s Vice President of Field Services Chris Schindler. “She was left to suffer and die a painful death. We hope this reward will motivate someone to come forward so that justice can be served.”

Once freed from the bags, the dog, now named Mary, was examined by HRA personnel and was determined to be alert and breathing. Mary was immediately transferred to Friendship Hospital for Animals for further care and evaluation. Later in the evening it was determined Mary could not be saved and was humanely euthanized.

This case is being investigated by HRA’s Humane Law Enforcement division. If you have any information about this case, please call 202-723-5730 (option 1).

When the animals of the District of Columbia need help, our dedicated professionals are available 24/7, offering a broad range of services, including humane euthanasia for pets. For all animal related emergencies please call 202-576-6664.

UPDATE: Safe! Bruce and Pappy are fully funded and will be rescued today!

URGENT OWNER SURRENDERS! SHELTER EUTHANIZING TODAY! Bruce and Pappy, a father and son pair of pug mixes, were surrendered this week because their owner can no longer care for them. The shelter is completely full, with unfortunate plans to euthanize dogs to clear space before day's end. As owner surrenders, Bruce and Pappy have no legal hold time, and we need to ensure these two boys make it out as soon as possible! We have a volunteer who can bring them to our partner vet's office over her lunch break if we can raise the $500 for their vetting, boarding, and transport in time. Please help us this morning by donating to Bruce and Pappy at bit.ly/CDR-Donate. Thank you!

His parents are frantically looking for him - it is very cold and he is unfamiliar with the area. Gator is about 15 lbs so he is small! He is wearing a rainbow striped collar and tag and the blue Polo seen in this photo. PLEASE SHARE and please keep Gator and his family in your prayers. They are devastated and just want him home! I was walking my new dog today, Ellie. I was talking to another dog walker and he mentioned there is a Facebook group called Bloomingdale Pups. I couldn't find it, but I found this page. Does anyone know what he might be talking about?

Hi Bloomingdale and LeDroit Dog Friends :) Dos your dog have a special skill? A super waggy tail? A great costume? Come show him or her off at the Bloomingdale Dog Show Saturday May 18th at Crispus Attucks Park. It's part of the big Community Day fundraiser and its sure to be a great day!
Please join us for the upcoming community meeting to discuss the field/park improvements at the Park at LeDroit. The meeting will be Thursday, January 31 at 7pm at St. George's Episcopal Church, 160 U Street NW. This will be an opportunity to see DPR, DGS, and the contractors' (AMT Engineering and Bennett Group) proposal for the field improvements and for you to provide feedback. Brief History of the Project: - The field at the Park at LeDroit is in need of improvements. The old school's foundation was not properly removed so construction materials are surfacing, creating a dangerous play environment and preventing trees from growing - With the help of Councilmember Nadeau, the Friends of the Park at LeDroit secured funding in the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget for field improvements to the Park at LeDroit DGS selected AMT Engineering and Bennett Group to carry out this project - On January 31, 2019 - DGS, DPR, and the contractors will present the plan to the community and seek feedback with the hopes of starting the field remediation this Spring We hope to see you on Thursday, January 31 so you can learn more about the project and provide your feedback. Please share the meeting information with any neighbors and organizations that care about the park and the community.
Dog Park Clean-Up this Saturday! December 15 10am-11am. Come out to help the Friends of the Park at Ledroit even out the gravel, do some weeding, socialize with your fellow neighbor dog owners and put new durable fencing inside the little dog's park. See you there!
Greetings Neighbors, It is time for another Friends of the Park at LeDroit Cleanup / Meetup this weekend. We will be gathering Saturday for a park cleanup, Saturday, November 17 from 10 - 11 am. It looks like it should be a brisk sunny day. Come out to help pick up trash and clean the park or just schedule this hour to come use the park and meet some neighbors. Whether you want to pick up trash, clean up your garden plot, drop off some books in the kids free library, use the playgrounds, workout out on the exercise equipment, or take your dog to the park, we hope to see you on Saturday 11/17 from 10-11am. We will have some coffee for volunteers, first-come, first-served. To support our work, including the park cleanups, special events and programming, our recent school supplies giveaway, etc., consider donating to the Friends of the Park at LeDroit by visiting our page on Green Spaces for DC: Friends of the Park at LeDroit. We appreciate any help you can provide: https://greenspacesfordc.org/friends-of-the-park-at-ledroit/ See you Saturday. All the best, John Hillegass on behalf of the Friends of the Park at LeDroit
