ON THIS DAY in 1969
"Currency notes in denominations larger than $100 were discontinued by the Department of the Treasury. Though issued until 1969, the $500, $1000, $5000 and $10,000 notes had not been printed since 1945. These notes are still legal tender but are rarely seen in circulation as most are in the hands of collectors."
