๐จโจ 9/13 | Meet Fran Mariscal, the artist behind the illustration of Valentรญn Fuster in ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ: ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ฌ, ๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐๐ฒ๐ฌ. His style blends expressive realism with a painterly, textured approach, combining bold color and atmosphere with the narrative sensibility of contemporary comics.
๐๏ธ โMy participation in the PORTRAITS project is mainly due to the trust that Josรฉ Villarrubia and the Spain Arts & Culture team placed in me. For me, it has been a true privilege, as well as an opportunityโalbeit one that comes with an enormous sense of responsibility. When I saw that I had been chosen to pay tribute to the Catalan cardiologist Valentรญ Fuster, I inevitably had to put my heart into it. What else could I do?โ
๐ค The Jerez-born Fran Mariscal made his debut as a writer-artist with Moribundo, a graphic novel about mental health and toxicity within the vampire genre. He recently illustrated Batman in Detective Comics Annual #1 (2026), and now returns with this short story about Valentรญ Fuster and a rather peculiar patient.
Portraits: 12 Lives, 12 Journeys pays tribute to twelve Spanish figures whose lives and careers were shaped by their connection to the United States, using comics and graphic storytelling to reflect the enduring cultural ties between the two countries.
