Today's U.S. Senate Toastmasters meeting featured Madisyn's DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) Journey to enable African American, Latino, AAPI and Native American families to build wealth through homeownership.

She also led a half dozen Table Topics (short speech questions) inspired by the new Maya Angelou quarter released from the U.S. Mint. Angelou is the first Black woman to be included on US currency.

Fun US Senate Toastmaster Fact: the staff leading that bill to enactment are both members of US Senate TM!

Carol gave some tips for responding to and requesting information interviews, the infamous "meet for coffee" requests that many Hill staff receive from wanna-be Hill staff.

Venus led the meeting with able assistance from Jackie (grammarian); Christina (evaluator - and author of a book on networking); Rebecca (evaluator and guest from California); Betsy (timer) and Bonnie (General Evaluator -- who reminded us to all speak more slowly).

The word of the day was SUCCINCT - thank you Betsy. So that's all the report!
Our next meeting is January 28th at Noon ET. Our new President will provide her icebreaker, Christina will speak on her firefighting adventures and Carol will preview her contest speech.

At today's U.S. Senate Toastmasters club meeting, we discussed our achievements for 2021 (President's Distinguished and 19 members!); learned tips for networking at defense contractor conventions (don't miss the French reception); and how to use visual prompts to tell a story!

Below is one of Bonnie's innovative Table Topics questions where over 90 seconds, these images pop up as you try to tell a coherent story. It's REALLY TOUGH but fun -- and improves your spontaneous speaking skills!

Bonnie evaluates Jake's scientific conference presentation

One of the benefits of Toastmasters is getting feedback on your presentations - in the club, workplace or out in the world.

Member Bonnie Maidak provides an insightful evaluation of Jake's scientific speech to a large conference on the web.

Her scientific expertise helped her hone in on suggestions for improvements related to his slides. She cautioned him -- and us -- to keep slides simple so they don't encourage the audience to read our slides and stop listening to the speaker.

Bonnie is a DTM - distinguished toastmaster - with decades of experience who offers members helpful, supportive and useful evaluations.

When you join Toastmasters, we can evaluate your work speeches, wedding toasts, sermons or whatever you need!

And, you can get credit on your Toastmasters Leadership Goals (Pathways) too!

Our next meeting is December 10th at noon ET with speeches from Laura and Patrick!

Christina and Jake turned the job interview project from the Engaging with Humor Path on its head today!

Jake played an evil scientist recruiting Christina to design the lasers for his strategically-placed hot dog stands in his bid for world domination.

Christina's hot dog experience involved boiling them in beer which impressed Jake as Dr. Zap, but not as much as her skill with lasers which would allow them to dispatch any patron of a competitor's hot dog stand.

Charles served as our Toastmaster of the Day for the first time and led a well organized if relatively zany meeting. Fola asked a number of food-related questions during the spontaneous Table Topics session.

Join our next meeting on Friday, December 10 at noon for more whimsical good times.

Today's Toastmasters Club meeting was an inspiration for folks interested in science, health and the Earth's history of giant mushrooms!

Fola introduced us to some health legends, Jake shared his data policy work with a Senator and how it combined with his farming background and also introduced us to giant mushrooms (see the comments section) and Christina's table topics questions were about extra terrestrials and science fiction.

Per Charles' word of the day, nothing was "verboten".

Our only meeting is November is on Friday the 12th; Christina will present the "Prepare for an Interview" project from the Engaging with Humor Path. Come learn more about how to dazzle your interviewer!

We welcomed many guests, including John Ojeifo, Division A Director!

Another excellent meeting today at USSTM! I answered a question about my relationship to cicadas; another Table Topics answerer explained about valuing time vs. money; and a third person said that the fictional character she most identifies with is Goofy because of the good-naturedness of the Goofy Disney character. Our three prepared speakers all included humor which caused several of us to laugh out loud, even though the topics might initially not sound humorous: a MRSA infection, Planning for a Wedding, and Always Learning. Fantastic courage shown by our newest members in serving as Timer, Grammarian, and General Evaluator.
