(7)

The Council fulfills its mission through its programs, which serve to educate the public about critical foreign policy issues affecting the national interest. Council programs include: Conferences and Ambassadors Forums, held in Washington, DC and cities around the country, to enhance the public's understanding of international issues. Ambassadors Roundtables, which allow members to engage in off-the-record, meaningful dialogues with foreign Chiefs of Mission currently accredited to the White House. Overseas Fact-finding Missions to enhance international relations and investigate the opportunities and challenges beyond our borders that generally cannot be gained through normal media channels. The Council collaborates with the U.S. Department of State to support the role of the American ambassador and the country team in carrying out U.S. foreign policy at embassies around the world. Programs such as the Ambassadorial Orientation program, which enables newly-appointed ambassadors to hear from and share experiences with those who have preceded them in the field, develop and strengthen this partnership. The Council sponsors The International Affairs Fellowship, which is a prestigious summer program that provides practical training through internships at the Department of State and academic studies in international affairs. The Council sponsors the Public Diplomacy Fellowship, which combines on-the-job training with academic study and mentoring by former United States ambassadors, public diplomacy/ public affairs officers and media/communications executives. Its purpose is to enhance the conduct and practice of U.S. public diplomacy through the provision of specialized training and mentoring opportunities for junior Public Diplomacy officers.

Prudence or Folly: A Case for Extending the New START Treaty

"New START should be promptly extended. Any other course would be, to put it mildly, inadvisable in the extreme. During the Cold War and immediately afterward when the various terrifying nuclear crises took place they were peaceably resolved because the right man or men were in the right place at the right time. We can’t always be sure of that in the future." Council of American Ambassadors Member Thomas Graham, Jr.

Ambassador Graham served as Special Representative for Arms Control, Nonproliferation and Disarmament, appointed by President Bill Clinton. He served for nearly three decades at the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency.

During the depths of the 45-year-long Cold War in the early years, neither side believed it had an understanding of what the other side was doing. Both sides feared a sudden bolt from the blue with nuclear weapons which would lay waste to their societies. The threat was indeed beyond rational descri...

Kosovo’s Challenges Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008, is the most pro-American country in the world. From 2012-13, it was also the world’s biggest per capita source of foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) in Syria. It would seem those two statements could not possibly both be...
