The Vineyard Wind approval could usher in the first wave of offshore projects

"The offshore oil and gas industry has shown a “huge level of interest” in the offshore wind space up and down the supply chain, said Erik Milito, the president of the National Ocean Industries Association, which represents the offshore oil and gas and wind industries.

It isn’t just oil and gas producers getting involved, either, he added, saying everything (from marine construction companies to offshore service vessel companies to seismic companies) is expanding into offshore wind.

“Because in the end, they’re all focused on constructing energy projects,” Milito said. “They have the expertise, based upon what they’re doing in offshore oil and gas, to easily step in and assist and help in the build-out of offshore wind.”"

President Biden hopes greenlighting this project will spur more just like it.

National Ocean Industries Association and Compass Publications are proud to announce the 2021 NOIA Safety in Seas Awards winners!

TechnipFMC is recognized for the Safety Practice Award for the Gemini ROV System. The ROV only needs monthly dives, leading to a 80-90% reduction in #HSE exposure time. The ROV also includes a Blow Out Preventer system that is capable of both shearing the drill string or casing inside a BOP and sealing a well.

GATE Energy is recognized for the Culture of Safety Award for their leadership and safety culture, including the development of an Integrated Management System (IMS) that is compliant with occupational health and safety management requirements.

Safety, health and environmental performance are a cornerstone of the offshore energy industry. We thank all the applicants, who represent almost every industry segment, for playing a strong role in the continuous advancement of safety in offshore operations.

Continuous safety innovation is one of the many reasons why the American offshore is, and should remain, the energy region of choice for the U.S. and the world.

NOIA urges continued oil, gas leasing in Gulf of Mexico to maintain GOMESA funding - Daily Energy Insider

The continued exploration and development of the Gulf of Mexico are critical in ensuring future funding for Gulf Coast communities, our national parks, conservation efforts throughout the country, and outdoor programs for urban, disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Without continued Gulf of Mexico oil and gas leasing, the important revenue that Gulf Coast states and other Americans depend upon will decline.

Today's #offshorewind announcement from the Biden Administration provides a foundation for exceptional offshore wind growth and tremendous investment throughout the nation.

While the development of Atlantic wind opportunities will provide substantial benefits to the states adjacent to lease areas, in areas like the Gulf Coast, you will find steel fabricators, heavy lift vessel operators, subsea construction companies, helicopter service providers and more who built their experience in the oil and gas industry but will be vital in building offshore wind.

The Biden Administration should further the offshore wind momentum and adopt a regular and predictable offshore wind lease auction schedule and ensure that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has the resources it needs to progress these ambitious goals will clear the way for a vibrant U.S. offshore wind industry

Could U.S. Federal Lease Ban Prompt A Rise In Carbon Leakage?

"The prolific offshore Gulf of Mexico appears to have borne the brunt of U.S. Presidential executive orders. This is simply because it is one of few major producing areas under federal purview. Campaign promises can be delivered on swiftly here.

While leasing bans and increasing royalties signal fast action on the energy transition, federal actions have consequences, and sometimes these can be global.

One unintended consequence the leasing ban could give rise to is carbon leakage to countries that export crude to U.S. Despite the growth in domestic production, the U.S. still imports 6 million barrels per day (b/d) of crude from foreign countries"

Wood Mackenzie discusses the impact of the Federal oil and gas leasing ban on #GHG emissions in Forbes:

While leasing bans and increasing royalties signal fast action on the energy transition, federal actions have consequences, and sometimes these can be global.

Biden administration invites industry groups, environmentalists to air views on oil plans

"The National Ocean Industries Association, which represents offshore oil service companies locally and across the U.S., welcomed the opportunity to participate in the forum.

But the group disputes the administration's contention that federal oil programs aren't serving Americans well.

"The offshore federal oil and gas program is serving the American public extremely well, considering that offshore production provides the lowest carbon barrels of oil, generates millions of dollars in funding for parks and recreation programs for underprivileged urban communities and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs that cover every state in America," the group's president, Erik Milito, said."

It is critical that the U.S. Department of the Interior involve industry leaders when holding their oil and gas virtual forum. The Gulf of Mexico is a tide that can lift every American. Blocking access to this premier energy basin will shift investments and jobs (not to mention emissions progress) out of the U.S.

U.S. officials say report on oil and gas sale ban due by summer

"Even a short-lived suspension on leasing will quickly affect companies, tying their hands as they seek to make drilling plans for coming years, said Erik Milito of the National Ocean Industries Association, which represents oil companies operating offshore.

“We will begin seeing companies starting to make decisions that will shift investments and jobs out of the U.S..” Milito said. The longer a suspension goes, he added, the more susceptible the administration will be to legal challenge."

Biden 'twisted' Democratic governors in knots with freeze on fracking leases

"danos already operates globally, but he said the company could move more of its support services to overseas waters if Biden’s indefinite leasing pause becomes permanent.

Biden’s halt on issuing new leases has not stopped companies from receiving permits to drill on existing leases stashed before he took office, but the offshore oil and gas industry is capital-intensive and highly speculative, requiring years of planning.

“We would rather work here, but at the end of the day, if we are forced to, we will support production somewhere else in the world because the world needs the oil,” Danos said."

Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is taking a risk by choosing to accommodate rather than fight President Biden’s pause on new oil and gas leases.

Newell: What if Biden's oil & gas moratorium becomes permanent?

“Erik Milito, President of the National Ocean Industries Association, stated that under a permanent leasing ban, Gulf of Mexico oil and gas production would drop from 2.3 - 4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, to about 910,000 by 2040,”

Newell said. “Obviously that's a fairly precipitous drop in the span of 19 years. And there are those that believe that early onset, the numbers would be staggering, because investment is going to be looking to go other places almost immediately, right?”

Eric Smith of Tulane University talks about what is at stake in the Gulf of Mexico with Newell Normand.

Biden Assurances on Jobs Sting Like Insults in Mines, Oil Patch

"Jerry, who has been fabricating fittings and parts for offshore facilities for 25 years, said the work comes with a good wage and retirement benefits, enabling him to pay tuition for one child in college and two others in private school."

Powerful piece in Bloomberg LP. When the U.S. locks away domestic oil and gas access, production goes abroad. When we outsource production we are also sending away jobs and investments. These jobs are good paying and accessible and are the foundation of families and communities along the Gulf Coast and throughout America.
