With much thanks to Ed Smith, President - IAFF Local 36 and DC Fire Property Management, Private Chamberlin has been officially memorialized in perpetuity by DC Council Proclamation with a bronze plaque now affixed to the front of his last firehouse, Engine 28–Truck 14 (Cleveland Park). And, just down the block from where he perished on March 1, 1965 at the Club Soda. What started out as a desire to renovate the firehouse in his name (January 2010) has now concluded with the hanging of a plaque recognizing my Grandfather as the sole Fallen Firefighter in a Line of Duty Death at this firehouse. A 6 ½ year journey developing a deep understanding for what it means to be a career firefighter in the 20th and now 21st century in DC and throughout the U.S. RIP.

This is the firefighter who risked his life by taking off his face mask and giving it to a woman he was trying to rescue. His name is Danny Lovato and he is assigned to Engine 18 but was working with Truck 7 when the fire broke out on Minnesota Avenue SE yesterday just after 4 PM. Firefighter Lovato is now in the intensive care unit at Medstar. According to Jason Woods with the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation he has a long recovery ahead of him.

With the conclusion of an important historical community project earlier this year, the CPCA worked with other Cleveland Park neighborhood organizations to host an open house for residents to stop in and tour the newly renovated firehouse. Working with Engine 28 Captain Robert Leland and other members of DC Fire Emergency Medical Services (DC FEMS), the firehouse opened its doors to the community on Sunday, June 8, 2014. Firefighters turned on the grill and graciously cooked more than 200 hamburgers and hot dogs. Clowns Judy, Gary and Sarah greeted children with creative balloon creations and the fire trucks were available for those special parent photos ops of little ones.

The Cleveland Park Historical Society included a wrap-up article on Engine Co. 28 renovation project (page 2). A BIG thank you to DFC David Foust and DFC Christopher Jordan (ret) - DC FEMS for their commitment from start to finish. As the article states, the project was a great example of what can be accomplished between public & private community partnerships here in our Nation's Capital.

Mayor's Agent Hearing Officer will hold public hearing on applications affecting property (Engine Co. 28) - to determine if public safety overrides historic preservation of current structure on Friday, 2/24 at 10:00 a.m. - Office of Planning, 1100 4th Stret, SW-6th Floor.

01/04/2012

It's clear from the various new articles that the Mayor's Agent and The Historic Preservation Office need to come up with a plan to address the door widening issue given there are potentially 10 other DC fire stations that will eventually be in the same renovation conundrum.

12/16/2011

The Historic Preservation Office denied the FEMS request to widen the apparatus bay doors at Engine 28 as part of the renovation.

FEMS now has to make a request through the Mayor's Agent to grant an exemption in order to get the renovation of Engine 28 started.

11/09/2011

The latest date for bid submissions is now November 21, 2011.

10/14/2011

FEMS has been notified that the date for the submission of bids for the renovation of Engine 28 and Engine 29 has been pushed back to November 7,2011. Don't know what the new date for the award to be made is.

08/24/2011

The Department of Real Estate Services has put the renovation of Engine 28 and Engine 29 out to bid. Companies can submit bids until October 11, 2011 and the scheduled award date is November 30, 2011.
