"International tax policymaking is a complex issue, but the arcane language of today’s agreement belies how simple and sweeping the stakes are: when this deal is enacted, Americans will find the global economy a much easier place to land a job, earn a living, or scale a business. President Biden often talks about a “foreign policy for the middle class.” Today, is what foreign policymaking for the middle class looks like in practice."

Yesterday, Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo traveled to Hyattsville, MD, where he heard from tenants, landlords, community leaders and administrators of Prince George’s County’s effective Emergency Rental Assistance program in a roundtable discussion hosted by
Housing Initiative Partnership, Inc.

Despite having to build their program largely from scratch, Prince George's County has already distributed 83% of its first round of ERA funds to more than 3,200 tenants and landlords.

They've implemented a variety of Promising Practices to make the program successful: they prioritize applications where the tenant is facing eviction and have developed relationships with legal aid services, county judges, and the local sheriff’s department. All eviction notices now include information about applying to the ERA program. They continue to look for creative ways to increase awareness of the program, including launching a mobile clinic this fall to help landlords and tenants sign-up.

Event participants included
Prince George's County Executive Office
County Executive Angela Alsobrooks
Senator Jim Rosapepe
Representatives from the office of Senator Van Hollen

Economic Hardship Declined in Households With Children as Child Tax Credit Payments Arrived

After just 1 month, it's already clear the #ChildTaxCredit is having a real impact on the lives of America’s children.

Of those who received the first monthly CTC payment in July:
• Roughly half reported using it to pay for food for their family
• 1 in 4 spent some of their CTC on clothing.
• The share of families reporting that they sometimes or often did not have enough to eat in the past week dropped to the lowest % since the pandemic began.

The CTC is helping families put food on the table & meet the needs of the next generation.

Treasury and IRS Announce Families of Nearly 60 Million Children Receive $15 Billion Dollars in First Payments of Expanded and Newly Advanceable Child Tax Credit

Today, roughly $15 billion dollars start going out to families that include nearly 60 million eligible children in the first monthly payment of the increased and expanded Child Tax Credit from the American Rescue Plan passed in March.

Experts have projected the American Rescue Plan will lift more than 5 million children out of poverty this year, cutting child poverty by more than half – and the expanded #ChildTaxCredit is the single largest contributor to this historic reduction.

We estimate that families containing +26 million children who would have received less than the full #ChildTaxCredit under the previous rules because their incomes were too low will now receive the full credit.
This means monthly payments of up to $300/child for the rest of 2021.
