December is Month!

Toys on the market may contain harmful materials like lead and others may also be a choking hazard.

When gift giving, it is important to stop and ask yourself, “Is the toy I am buying safe?” “Is it age appropriate for the child who’ll be receiving it?”

This week Mayor Bowser and DOEE are celebrating the NEW community solar installation in Ward 5! Over 500 families will see energy savings! 🎉 (Swipe for a glimpse of the installation site.)
⚡️
On Monday, December 19, our Director, Tommy Wells, joined partners at DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) and DC Water to celebrate the installation. The Community Renewable Energy Facility (CREF) in Ward 5 is one of the largest CREFs in the District. At 1.8 megawatts (MW), this community solar facility will provide energy savings of around $500 annually to more than 500 low-to-moderate income District families through the District’s Solar for All program.
⚡️
students from the school’s STEM program talked about renewable energy in DC, how these community solar installations operate, and how they hope to take advantage of opportunities in green industries as they approach graduation. The community solar installation will be completed later in 2023.

December is Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month 🧸 👶🏼👶🏽👶🏾👶🏿
Yesterday, our Lead-Safe and Healthy Housing Program hit the road to spread the word.

Follow along as we spread the word about common items that are known to contain lead, and recalled toys with lead hazards.

This holiday season (and beyond), the makers of Safe Toys and Gifts month (Prevent Blindness America) asks everyone to consider the following guidelines for choosing safe toys for all ages:

· Inspect all toys before purchasing. Avoid those that include parts that fly off. The toy should have no sharp edges or points and should be sturdy enough to withstand impact without breaking, being crushed, or being pulled apart easily.

· Be diligent about inspecting toys your child has received. Check them for age, skill level, and developmental appropriateness before allowing them to be played with.

· Gifts of sports equipment should always be accompanied by protective gear (give a helmet with the skateboard).

· Keep kids safe from lead in toys by: Educating yourself about lead exposure from toys, symptoms of lead poisoning, and what kinds of toys have been recalled; being aware that old toys may be more likely to contain lead in the paint; having your children wash their hands frequently and calling your doctor if you suspect your child has been exposed to lead.
· Do NOT give toys with ropes and cords or heating elements.

· Do NOT give crayons and markers unless they are labeled “nontoxic.”

Check out the attached checklist about Safe and Unsafe toys.

Happy Holidays from DOEE!

Two programs are working in tandem to encourage and incentivize investment in the construction and long-term maintenance of green infrastructure projects that reduce stormwater runoff and generate financial returns while protecting our local watersheds.
.
In a new case study, local DC civil engineering firm GordonDC shares their perspective on how the Stormwater Retention Credit (SRC) and Self Inspection, Self Reporting (SISR) programs are bringing greater flexibility for design professionals as they guide their clients in meeting important environmental regulations. While some projects offer ample opportunities for green infrastructure elements, others demand more innovative solutions to meet regulatory requirements. Design professionals who understand the District’s options for stormwater management can save their clients time and money while meeting design and environmental goals.

.
The Catholic University of America provides a case study on the success of our Stormwater Retention Credit (SRC) and Self-Inspection Self-Reporting (SISR) programs. Across its 176-acre urban campus, has installed green roofs, rain gardens, cisterns, and new tree plantings that retain and treat stormwater naturally instead of letting it run off campus. These all add up when it comes to creating Stormwater Retention Credits.

This week, we had tree crews in our block. That was great and much appreciated.

Not so great was the oil spill they left all over our front yards, retaining walls, front step and side walk, which will soon make its way to the sewer and into our watershed. Take a look at the video and then please let me know when someone from the city will come address this. I have placed a ticket with 311. Cc:Elissa Silverman for DC Council Charles Allen
