July 3 is National CROWN Day, a day which commemorates the signing of the first legislation in California in 2019. The CROWN Act stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” and in 2024, there are still 24 states that have no protections against hair-based discrimination. Thank you to our partners for your support and work on the important issue.

February 7th is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), a day dedicated to raising awareness of the disproportionate impact of HIV among Black Americans and the importance of increasing access to HIV education, testing, treatment, and prevention services in Black communities.

Black communities in the United States face significant structural and societal barriers to accessing HIV prevention, testing and care services. As a result, HIV has a disproportionate impact on the Black population. In 2021, Black people represented 40% of new HIV diagnoses and 40% of all people living with HIV in the U.S. despite making up only 14% of the U.S. population. The problem is even more acute in the South, where Black Americans accounted for 49% of all new HIV diagnoses in 2021, despite making up 19% of the Southern population. The disparity is clear in HIV prevention as well—in 2021, only 14% of PrEP users in the U.S. were Black. Progress has been made, however, especially in HIV testing. In 2021, 56% of Black people reported having ever tested for HIV, which is the highest percentage among any racial/ethnic group. In comparison, the national average was just 35%.
