In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Archer Center recognizes the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the largest and oldest Hispanic and Latino civil rights organization in the United States. Many of our Archer Fellows have interned with LULAC over our twenty-year history. We asked Fall 2021 Archer Fellow Alexzandra Roman and Summer 2021 Graduate Archer Fellow Saul Leon Dubon to reflect on their recent experiences interning with this long-standing organization.

On Friday, the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Archer Fellow Alumni Association welcomed our newest cohort to the #ArcherFam! The reception was a fun opportunity for the Fall 2021 Archer Fellows to connect and network with Archer Fellow alums in and around our nation's capital. Special thanks to Jim Ramsey and Poonam Vaidya (chapter co-chairs) for putting on such a memorable event!

The Archer Center family joins the UTEP community in mourning the loss of President Emerita Diana Natalicio. Dr. Natalicio was instrumental in advocating for the expansion of the Archer Fellowship Program to include UT El Paso; this semester marks the twentieth anniversary of UT El Paso's first Archer Fellow cohort. Her legacy will not be forgotten.

UTEP President Emerita Diana Natalicio, who led the University from 1988 to 2019, has died. The UTEP community mourns the loss of an inspirational leader whose legacy of access and excellence lives on.

On Saturday, September 11, our Fall 2021 Archer Fellows participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Four members of the cohort (Janae Steggall, Arjun Mehendale, Virginia Macias, and Madeleine Bruno) presented the wreath before the Tomb. The Archer Center is proud to take part in this time-honored tradition that pays tribute to the sacrifices of America’s service members.

In fall 2001, eleven undergraduate students had just arrived in Washington, D.C., to participate in the newly founded Bill Archer Fellowship Program when the world dramatically changed. The Archer Family joins the rest of our country as we honor those whose lives were lost on September 11, 2001, and give our thanks to America’s first responders on that tragic day.

The Archer Center

Twenty years. Fifteen hundred alumni. One mission.

Since 2001, the Archer Fellowship Program has provided highly motivated students from across The University of Texas System with the opportunity to live, learn, and intern in our nation’s capital. We are proud to celebrate twenty years of educating the next generation of leaders for local, state, federal, and international service!

In recognition of this important milestone, the Archer Center joined the Archer Center Trust and the Archer Fellow Alumni Association to create a new 20th Anniversary Student Success Fund. Join us in celebrating our 20th anniversary and Congressman Archer’s legacy by making a gift today: giving.utdallas.edu/archer

We had a blast welcoming our Fall 2021 Archer Fellows to Washington, D.C., this week! Some highlights of Welcome Week included our traditional sunrise class at the Lincoln Memorial with Dr. Joel Swerdlow and Professor Shema Mbyirukira, a visit from Captain Cookie’s food truck for gourmet ice cream sandwiches, and the cohort's first weekend class with Dr. John Daly, which featured an Archer Fellow alumni panel.

Here’s to a great semester ahead!

As fall approaches, we thought we’d hang onto summer just a little bit longer by featuring a Graduate Archer Fellow! Trey Cinclair (summer 2020) is currently a third-year M.D./M.P.H. student at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. As an Archer Fellow, Trey interned at the White House, where he researched the intersectionality of the COVID-19 pandemic and the senior counselor’s policy initiatives. As a future physician, he plans to continue his passion for increasing physician advocacy in U.S. healthcare policy.

Trey received a bachelor’s degree in biology from The University of Texas at Austin and was previously a middle school science teacher and high school basketball coach for Dallas ISD. Read more about Trey: bit.ly/TreyCinclair

Congratulations to the Summer 2021 Graduate Archer Fellows on their graduation this week! Following commencement, the cohort was invited to a graduation reception at the historic Hay-Adams Hotel, followed by a sunset class at the D.C. War Memorial.

This group of extraordinarily talented graduate and medical students represented eleven universities from the University of Texas System, and we are so proud of all they have accomplished this summer. Whether returning to their home campus to continue their studies or remaining in D.C. to begin their careers, we wish them success and welcome them as our newest members of the Archer Fellow Alumni Association!

Washington Week is a wrap! Members of the Summer 2020 Graduate Archer Fellowship Program cohort joined us in the nation’s capital for a week filled with sightseeing, fellowship, special events, and even some in-person classes! Because the Summer 2020 program was delivered virtually last summer, this was a special opportunity for the cohort to visit the Archer Center and explore the city together. Our thanks to Dr. Archie Holmes (University of Texas System Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs), Dr. Nolan Perez (UT System Regent), and Mimi Nguyen (UT System Student Regent and Fall 2017 Archer Fellow) for participating in these memorable events with us.

This week’s #FellowFriday is twice as nice: We’re featuring two married Archer Fellow alumni! Drs. Pavela (Bambekova) and Chirag Buch are currently in their respective medical residencies at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Both received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a Doctor of Medicine degree through FAME, a joint medical program between The University of Texas at San Antonio and UTHealth San Antonio.

As Archer Fellows in the spring of 2016, Pavela interned with The Urban Institute Health Policy Center and Chirag interned with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of the Surgeon General under Dr. Vivek Murthy. They credit their time in Washington, D.C., as having a tremendous influence on their careers in healthcare and teaching them the real meaning of public service.
