Christmas season is approaching and once again we are proud to join the Delegation of the European Union in the United States to share some holiday tastes and tunes with the EU Holiday Celebrations Book! 🌲

For this year’s edition, we have contributed a special recipe of Skalický Trdelník, a delicacy from the western Slovak town Skalica/Mesto Skalica, located in the Slovak-Moravian border area.
The earliest recipe for the sweet pastry made of yeast dough was found dating back to 1783 to the city of Skalica from which it spread to the whole Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Great to participate at the first session of this year’s Embassy Adoption Program at Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School in Washington, D.C.

During this first encounter with the 5th graders, we introduced Slovakia to our 10-11 year old friends who were eager to learn about our country’s landscape, culture, traditions, gastronomy and wildlife.

Unexpectedly vast amount of questions was a surprise and confirmed that curiosity and playful learning are an irreplaceable part of education.

Look forward to our next lesson taking place at our Embassy.

In lights shine ✨

Last Thursday, the first light park has been officially opened in Slovakia.

The light exhibition “Lights speak” , which carries the message "light against darkness" comprises more than 45 light installations with more than 400,000 lights, among them a light tunnel, interactive light photo frames, an eighth - metre tall Christmas tree, nativity scene and a limitation of Bratislava Castle made of 13,680 lights.

Thanks to thrifty LEDs, the exhibition is energy-efficient. "The entire light park with hundreds of thousands of LEDs consumes only 7.5 kWh. For illustration, an hour of light exposure is equal to an hour of operation of three electric kettles that we normally use at home. The exhibition Lights Speak is a direct demonstration of the fact that even when implementing such a large-scale project, it is possible to behave ecologically”.

Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day, which we celebrate on November 17th, is one of the most significant days in the 🇸🇰 modern history.

Symbol of the fall of the Communist regime, it was 3️⃣4️⃣ years ago when thousands of Slovak and Czech students and civil society flooded the streets. Holding keys in their hands and jingling while saying goodbye to the old regime remains an inherent sign of the Velvet revolution.

The changes that took place after November 1989 had a society-wide impact. They paved the way to democracy, freedom and economic development. The courageous effort of November 89 actors allowed future generations to reap the benefits of freedom. Freedom and democracy which we must never stop fighting for and uphold because they are a constantly evolving, adventurous, beautiful, but also fragile.

Thank you for celebrating this pivotal milestone with us!

, which symbolically also falls on Veterans Day, the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to the United States Radovan Javorčík and Defense Attaché Brigadier General Slavomír Staviarsky along with our friends from the US Army and US Marine Corps paid tribute to Slovak-American Sgt. Michael Strank on the 104th anniversary of his birth at the Arlington National Cemetery.

Born in Jarabina/Орябина, Slovakia 🇸🇰,️ Strank was one of the Marines who famously raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi on the Island of Iwo Jima.

His sacrifice represents millions of soldiers that fought in the and lost their lives in combat. By their heroism in defense of humanity and human dignity, our warriors allowed for the creation of an alliance of democratic nations that has survived decades. We must protect it today – never taking our freedom for granted.

Great to participate at the first Washington, D.C. Diplomatic Day of Kindness at the Covenant House - youth homeless shelter in Washington D.C. to help youth facing homelessness and human trafficking.

As Mayor Bowser put it, even the smallest acts of kindness can inspire positive change, strengthen communities and build lasting connections. Diplomacy, can be a powerful tool and bridge that connects people of diverse cultures, backrounds and perspectives.

Thank you Washington Educational & Cultural Attache Association and Embassy of Marocco and Trinidad and Tobago for this inspiring initiative. 🌸

34 years ago, on November 9, 1989, the very symbol of the Iron Curtain - the Berlin Wall - fell.

The international community commemorates this day as a World Freedom Day. 🕊

It marked not only the end of the Cold War, the division of Berlin and Germany, but also the victory of freedom and democracy over tyranny and regimes suppressing basic human rights and freedoms.
During this seismic event the propaganda and fear were replaced with a sense of freedom and unity.

It is a reminder that the power and persistence of civic pressure and the desire for freedom can lead to positive change throughout society and a bright example that we must never relent in the struggle for democratic principles, the rule of law and the protection of freedom for every individual.

🇸🇰 commemorates 31st years since the passing of Alexander Dubček.
An important figure in the post-war history of Europe he remains the most famous Slovak politician in the world. After he assumed the post of First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, efforts to democratise socialism began to grow stronger. However, reform attempts within the so-called Prague Spring met with resistance from the top leadership of the Soviet Union, which perceived it as a threat to the dominance of the USSR in Central Europe. It was feared that reformist would become a dangerous example other countries to follow.

He was the second laureate of the Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought, awarded by the European Parliament. At the end of his life, he became an open supporter of European integration based on the values of solidarity, social equality and tolerance. Even though a tragic accident in the fall of 1992 prevented him from participating in the further democratic development of Slovakia, his legacy and values he fought for live on.

Today as we celebrate The Feast of All Saints in Slovakia 🇸🇰 and also remember our loved ones that passed away, our cemeteries turn into a beautiful spectacle of lights. 🕯️

105 years ago the First Czechoslovak Republic was born out of aspirations of two nations longing for self determination and freedom. 🇸🇰🇨🇿

was rooted in democratic values that became the key to the restoration of a free Czechoslovakia after the fall of the communist regime and the cornerstone of the independent Slovak Republic after 1993.

It created space for progress, international cooperation and modernisation and became one of the world's advanced economies.
It also guaranteed political rights to women for the first time in the history of nations, thus overtaking many advanced states in Europe at the time.
We have not forgotten our democratic basis, even after decades of totalitarianism and unfreedom. This era reminded us that freedom and democracy are never to be taken for granted.
Today, we need to remember that democracy needs to be painstakingly built.
By joining the EU and NATO, we are continuing to fulfil the legacy of our forefathers - we want to be among the advanced, free and democratic countries that stand on the opposite side to aggressive and authoritarian regimes.

Today, together with our friends from Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, DC and US friends we paid homage to Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk at the Masaryk Memorial in Washington, DC.

After opening remarks of the Czech Ambassador Miloslav Stašek, Deputy Assistant Secretary Sonata Coulter from the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the US DOS and the Slovak Ambassador Radovan Javorčík held remarks during the wreath laying ceremony.

They underscored the legacy of the first President of the Czechoslovak Republic and one of the leading figures who - along with Milan Rastislav Štefánik and Edvard Beneš– laid foundations for the first common State of Czechs and Slovaks and one of the most modern, inclusive democracy of the time.

The new State had a significant impact on the formation of our nationhood through the establishment of educational, cultural, social and political organizations which would had not existed otherwise. To this date, both our states draw inspirations for its democratic values and principles from those laid down by our first Republic.

78 years ago, on 24 October 1945, the United Nations was founded and the UN Charter entered into force. 📜
This organization was founded on the ideals of peace, security, democracy, and cooperation among nations to prevent further devastating conflicts. 🕊
This week 🇸🇰 celebrates 30 years of our membership in the UN 🇺🇳.
Sadly, we are witnessing increasing violations of the principles of international law, undermining efforts to achieve sustainable development and attacks on global peace and security. It is therefore necessary to remind ourselves of the values on which the UN is founded.
Symbolically, today is also the 127th anniversary of the birth of the Slovak diplomat Ján Papánek (24 October 1896), whose work as one of the co-authors of the UN Charter has gone down in the foundations of this organisation.
The UN is a unique project of cooperation between nations. Slovakia has a firm place in it, not only thanks to the work of Ján Papánek, but also thanks to the work of our citizens in the UN structures and in humanitarian and development projects.

Last week Slovak Embassy along with our EU family took part in the annual Taste of Europe event, celebrating the 🇪🇺🇺🇸agriculture partnership at Eastern Market on Capitol Hill.

Transatlantic cooperation is crucial to addressing the world's greatest agricultural and food challenges, especially nowadays - message that strongly resonated in the presence of Congressman John Rose and Congressman Jim Costa.

Unity in diversity was clearly visible in the display and the variety of European food with Slovakia showcasing our traditional "jablková štrúdľa", carbonated grape- based soft drink Vinea and delicious Slovak wines from wineries Víno DIOUS, Vinárstvo Habsburg and KARPATSKÁ PERLA. 🍷

09/27/2023

Today, we remember 50 years since Štefan Osuský, one of the most influential Slovak personalities, diplomat, politician, lawyer and university professor passed away.

A co-author of the Cleveland Agreement, which reaffirmed the commitment of Slovaks and Czechs to fight for self-determination; when the borders of Czechoslovakia were being discussed, he fought for every square metre of his homeland.

After the creation of Czechoslovakia, Osuský represented the country at the most important international conferences. In 1920, Osuský became the Czechoslovak delegate to the League of Nations, his 14-year stint as chairman of the Control Commission setting a record.

His dedication and commitment to the values of freedom and democracy were evident also during the World War II. He was one of the leaders of the anti-fascist resistance in exile including at his post as Ambassador in Paris. After the war, he lived in the U.S., where he passed away in Herndon, Virginia, on this day in 1973.

In honor of Štefan Osuský, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic is preparing to launch an educational project for young diplomats, which will carry his name - “Štefan Osuský Summer School of Diplomacy .“

Every time we visit the place of Štefan Osuský´s last rest at The Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington, DC, we feel more honoured to have the opportunity to follow up on his ideals and values he represented and fought for.

Yesterday, we celebrated the Slovak mass in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of dedication of our Lady of Sorrows Chapel.

The chapel is a gift of the Slovak Americans in the Slovak Union of the United States and Canada. Inscribed in Slovak above the altar is the text: “Our Mother of Sorrows, Virgin Mary, Patroness of the Slovak People, Pray for Us.”

This altar reminds millions of people who visit the basilica of the legacy of the Slovak people in the United States who despite their hard work in coal mines, steel and industrial factories in order to sustain themselves and their families didn't forget their spiritual heritage.
