An informed and engaged public is key to a strong democracy.

AFSA is proud to convene an expert panel of speakers at the Road Scholar / Chautauqua Institution’s annual program to discuss the issues shaping America’s role in the world and the value of diplomacy in helping us understand them.

In a world saturated with information—but often short on facts—thoughtful conversations and trusted expertise help turn information into understanding.

The response to the DRC’s Ebola outbreak demonstrates that global health is more than a development issue—it is a consequential arena for diplomacy, partnership, and strategic influence.

Op-Ed in The National Interest:

The elimination of US aid programs is now undermining the US commercial strategy in Africa.

A great conversation was had in Chicago! 🌎

AFSA President John “Dink” Dinkelman recently joined Ambassador Ian Kelly’s class at Northwestern University to speak with students about diplomacy, foreign aid, and the role of U.S. foreign policy in addressing global challenges.

Engaging with the next generation of leaders is essential to fostering a deeper understanding of diplomacy and public service. Thank you to Ambassador Kelly and the students for the thoughtful discussion and warm welcome.

As the diplomatic and development workforce came under unprecedented attack, AFSA, a once behind-the-scenes organization, stepped into the fight publicly.

AFSA exists for—and because of—our Foreign Service members: those serving around the world, those who have served, those whose careers have been disrupted, and those who continue to believe this profession is worth defending.

During this turbulent year, as our mission was tested in ways we never thought possible, AFSA was able not only to sustain but expand its most important work: defending the nonpartisan Foreign Service and its people.

Thanks to our members, AFSA has been able to protect careers, advocate for the profession, and step up for the Foreign Service when it mattered most.

Thank you for your membership and your service.

is both a celebration and a reminder.

We celebrate the LGBTQ+ Foreign Service members, families, and colleagues who have helped shape American diplomacy, while recognizing that the work of building a truly inclusive and equitable workforce is ongoing.

This month, our first-floor conference room carries that message in color, with AFSA’s tagline displayed in rainbow. A sweet behind-the-scenes note: President Dinkelman came in on a Sunday with his daughter to help decorate the space.

AFSA remains committed to supporting and advocating for our entire community.
