Official Trailer: Courage On Canvas 2021

"At Life Pieces To Masterpieces, we know that our stories can benefit the world. When we translate our pain, our joy, our fear, our love, our experience, into a form of art, we have created something that can help someone else. Whether they can connect to it, learn from it, be inspired by it, or reflect on it. We recognize that and so we put these masterpieces into the world, vulnerably telling our stories as we transform our lives and communities. It is that vulnerability that requires courage, and that is why, for 25 years, these boys and young men have been expressing their courage on these beautifully stitched layers of sewn canvas."

Honoring our past.
Celebrating our present.
Creating our future.
Expressing our courage on canvas.

Last week, our city lost a hero. We send our love to the amazing Baba Melvin Deal, founder & Director of African Heritage Dancers & Drummers. His spirit, love of dance, and love for African culture and all of humanity inspired many. Baba’s leadership brought funding to the arts community East of the River – without his being, it is hard to imagine how organizations like Life Pieces To Masterpieces could be who we are.

A decade ago, a group of LPTM youth Apprentices had the opportunity to learn from Baba directly and document his life in a biography. In honor of the great Baba Melvin Deal, we wanted to share that story with the world today.

Baba, we give thanks today and every day. Rest in peace.

How this after-school program achieved a high vaccination rate in a Black neighborhood where most young adults are unvaccinated

Thank you to Perry Stein and the Washington Post for this beautiful and important story of our boys and young men, our leadership, our parents, and our community working together to ensure we can keep each other safe while preparing for an important school year!

"[Life Pieces] made sure I was safe, so when the vaccine came around I wanted to make sure everyone here and all the kids were safe.” - Brother Tre'Von, LPTM Brothers-in-Power Apprentice

"I told [my mom] that if you and me are safe, and our grandma is safe, then the kids here have less risk of spreading it to their grandmas, who may have underlying conditions.” - Brother Tory'elle, LPTM Brothers-in-Power Apprentice

Two summers ago, Life Pieces hosted one of our most meaningful and memorable Color Me Community experiences in our 25-year history, inviting a number of artists and activists from Afghanistan into our space, exploring the ways in which artistic expression can build community and drive social change.

Today, we are thinking of these courageous men and women, praying for their safety, and wishing for peace in their beautiful country.

Live to Create! Brother Larry's Story

In 1996, Larry Quick, an artist born and raised in Ward 7’s Kenilworth Parkside & Kenilworth Courts public housing community, graduated with a BFA from the Corcoran School of Art, and knew Black boys from his community needed a space to express themselves. Life Pieces To Masterpieces was co-founded in the Ward 7 Lincoln Heights public housing community by Larry together with Mary Brown, a highly regarded advocate for youth, and Ben Johnson, a skilled fundraiser.

25 years later, Life Pieces To Masterpieces has become a home away from home where more than 1,000 young men have used artistic expression to transform their lives and communities, built from the foundation of Larry's life. 25 years later, Brother Larry Quick is a renowned artist, and he continues to create high end commissioned work nationally. This is Brother Larry's story.

General information

Life Pieces To Masterpieces is a safe sanctuary for hundreds of African American young men and boys growing up in Washington, DC’s most poverty-stricken and volatile neighborhoods. In a city with the highest rate of poverty in the United States, there is an urgent need for this loving and supportive environment for turning expressions of fear and anger into hope and joy. More than 90 percent of our Apprentices live in Wards 7 and 8 in Washington, DC. They represent the more than 45,000 predominantly African American children under age 18 that live in the area. Research shows that these two wards are underserved and plagued by a myriad of social, physical, and mental health programs including gang activity, HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, violence, and incarceration. These problems are compounded by a lack of positive male role models. 75 percent of households are headed by single females. Our after school and weekend programs provide Apprentices with daily homework assistance, leadership development and meditation. We connect our Apprentices to the broader world for career and learning opportunities.

LPTM took its name from the unique style of art the participants (called apprentices) collectively create. The technique involves the painting of canvas, cutting it into various shapes, and sewing the pieces together allowing each individual to tell their powerful stories. This innovative form of art encourages the apprentices to process challenging life experiences and serves as a powerful metaphor for positive development – the “masterpiece".

Thanks to the generosity of our friends at Planet Word Museum, over 500 books were donated to young readers this past week! We are absolutely delighted that titles from our diverse and inclusive catalog will be added to bookshelves across the Greater Washington area. We know how important it is for youth to see themselves represented in books -- and how powerful it can be for young people to see authors just like them. A HUGE thank you to Planet Word for making this donation possible!! Packages of books were dropped off by SMP Board Chair Suzanne at Sasha Bruce Youthwork, BEST Kids Mentoring Program, Life Pieces To Masterpieces, Inc., One Common Unity, and SchoolTalk DC. These organizations were chosen because they offer mentoring programs for local youth and share our values of investing in young people whose communities are underrepresented in literature. Titles from the authors of Ballou Senior High School, Beacon House, Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop, and Reach Incorporated were included in donations. Happy reading!
Dear Life Pieces to Masterpieces: you are a beacon of a shining future for many young Black men and I applaud you and support your cool and meaningful work!
