Celebrating leadership, connection, and new horizons! 🌟🇺🇸🇱🇺

As Ambassador Nicole Bintner-Bakshian is nearing the end of her term, we gathered with colleagues and friends from the US Administration and Congress to honor her leadership and the bridges she built during her time in the United States.

The event also reflected on our shared history while looking ahead to the future:
🖼️ To mark America250, a special exhibition at the Embassy highlighted prominent Americans with Luxembourg heritage.
🚀 Meredith McKay, on behalf of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, presented a special gift recognizing the Ambassador’s dedication to the Artemis Accords and international cooperation in space innovation.

A truly memorable send-off for someone who has left a lasting impact. Wishing Ambassador Bintner-Bakshian all the best for her next chapter! 💼✨

Celebrating shared heritage, honoring legacies, strengthening ties

As the United States prepared to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Ambassador Nicole Bintner-Bakshian and Consul Jenna Liberatore traveled to the Midwest to celebrate U.S.–Luxembourg ties and honor the lasting legacy of Luxembourg immigrants who helped shape American life, culture, and communities. 🇱🇺🇺🇸

At Assisi Heights in Rochester, MN, the Ambassador and the Consul paid tribute to Mother Alfred Moes, co-founder of St. Mary’s Hospital, which laid the foundation to the renowned Mayo Clinic. The delegation also honored Mary Nilles, whose lifelong commitment to preserving Luxembourg heritage—including her efforts to support the restoration of the historic MARNACH HOUSE—has strengthened connections between Luxembourg and the Luxembourg-American community.

In Dubuque, IA, the delegation visited the Center for Dubuque History, home to rich archives—including works by Luxembourg immigrant Nicholas Gonner, in particular the Luxembourg Gazette—highlighting the Luxembourg-American story. Many thanks to the Center’s team and Claire from Congresswoman Ashley Hinson’s office for making the visit so special.

In St. Donatus, IA, and La Crosse, WI, exchanges with Luxembourg-American associations underscored their vital role in preserving traditions and passing stories across generations.

This trip—and the America250 celebrations—offer a meaningful moment to reflect on the generations of Luxembourgers who helped build communities and enrich the United States’ cultural fabric. Their legacy remains an integral part of America’s story—and a powerful reminder of what everyday people can achieve.

A Celebration of America250

We’re concluding our series for the United States’ 250th celebrations by honoring an extraordinary Luxembourg-American: Edward Steichen 🇺🇸🇱🇺

From Luxembourg to Michigan, Wisconsin to the global stage, Edward Steichen’s journey is that of a true visionary who transformed photography forever. Born in Luxembourg in 1879 and raised in the United States, Steichen became a pioneering photographer, painter, and curator who helped establish photography as a modern art form and a powerful means of communication.

Working across fine art, fashion, documentary, and exhibition-making, he influenced visual culture on both sides of the Atlantic. As Director of Photography at the MoMA The Museum of Modern Art in New York, he curated more than 50 exhibitions—including (1955), one of the most famous and widely visited photographic exhibitions of all time.

As we celebrate America250, we invite you to capture moments in the spirit of Edward Steichen—and preserve your memories through photography 📸

Did you know the Chicken McNugget was invented by a Luxembourger?

Luxembourg-born chef René Arend helped shape American fast-food history. Trained in fine dining and experienced in elite kitchens, he spent six years at Chicago’s luxury Drake Hotel before joining McDonald's in 1976 as Executive Chef.

Tasked with expanding the menu beyond hamburgers, Arend transformed chicken into a global staple by creating the —along with its original sauces. When demand exceeded supply, he introduced another innovation: the McRib, which went on to achieve cult status.

A Luxembourg-American story with a global cultural impact 🍗✨

A Celebration of America250

Today we continue our series by highlighting Paul Lauterbur—an American chemist with Luxembourgish roots whose curiosity changed the world.

Born on May 6, 1929, in Sidney, Ohio, to Edward Lauterbur and Gertrude Wagner, he traced his paternal roots to Michel Lauterbur of Dalheim, Luxembourg—a family that had settled in the United States around 1846.

Paul Lauterbur studied chemistry at the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He also pursued graduate studies in chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh

Through groundbreaking work applying nuclear magnetic resonance to imaging, Lauterbur made it possible to see inside the human body without harmful radiation—laying the foundation for MRI technology as we know it today.

His discovery transformed modern medicine and is now used in hospitals around the world. In 2003, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, alongside Peter Mansfield.

A legacy of innovation, curiosity, and impact.

A Celebration of America250

We’re starting our series today with the story of Mother Alfred Moes.

Mother Mary Alfred Moes (1828–1899) was a Roman Catholic nun who was a fearless and visionary leader whose unwavering faith, perseverance, and bold determination not only challenged societal norms but also laid the foundation for the world-renowned Mayo Clinic.

Born in Luxembourg, she immigrated to the United States in 1851. A teacher, founder, organizer, and tireless advocate for the most vulnerable, she led communities across the Midwest and responded to crises ranging from the Chicago Fire to yellow fever outbreaks.
After a tornado struck Rochester, she pushed for a permanent hospital and convinced Dr. Mayo to join forces. Their collaboration became St. Mary’s Hospital — and eventually the Mayo Clinic

Her vision still saves lives today.
