For almost two decades—since the Kurdistan Region was first liberated with the help of American forces during “Operation Provide Comfort” in 1991—the Kurdistan Regional Government has been working to build its government, infrastructure, economy and social institutions to become a positive, contributing member of the global community. To this end, the people of the Kurdistan Region are doing their

part to help the country of Iraq along its path towards increased stability, security, and democracy, in accordance with our federal constitution. As we continue to progress, we are reassured by the commitment of the United States Government to a long-term, strategic relationship with Iraq and the KRG. We in the Kurdistan Region remain thankful for the sacrifices made by the U.S. We are further proud of the fact that no American has been killed or injured in the Kurdistan Region in almost 20 years. This fact stands as a testament to the friendship that exists between the people of the Kurdistan Region and Americans, as well as to the shared values that exist between us.

Today, on Assyrian Martyrs’ Day, we honor the memory of the Assyrian men, women, and children who lost their lives because of persecution and violence.

We remember the victims of the 1933 Simele Massacre, the Assyrian Genocide, and all those who lost their lives in later conflicts. We honor their memory and reaffirm the importance of protecting religious freedom, preserving cultural heritage, and preventing such tragedies from happening again.

The Kurdistan Regional Government stands with the Assyrian community in remembrance. Together, we remain committed to dignity, coexistence, peace, and respect for all.

The KRG-US Representation extends its deepest condolences to Ms. Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman on the passing of her beloved husband, Mr. Mozaffar Shafeie.

Mr. Shafeie’s passion for art and theatre was truly inspiring. He had a remarkable way of seeing the world and sharing its beauty with those around him. He will be remembered for his creativity, warmth, and the lasting impact he made on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Bayan, their family, and loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Today, we commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the genocide of the Barzanis.

On July 31, 1983, the former Ba’ath regime abducted more than 8,000 Barzani men and boys from displacement camps near Erbil. They were taken to the deserts of southern Iraq, executed, and buried in mass graves. Thousands remain missing to this day.

We remember the innocent victims, the families who never received answers, and the women who endured unimaginable loss while raising their children without the fathers, husbands, sons, and brothers who were taken from them.

We also honor the resilience of the survivors and all those who helped shelter and support the targeted families.

The victims of the Barzani genocide and the Anfal campaigns will never be forgotten. Their memory strengthens our continued commitment to truth, recognition, justice, and the prevention of genocide everywhere.

Today, Representative Treefa Aziz attended the funeral services of Senator Lindsey Graham on behalf of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Kurdish people to pay our final respects to a true friend of Kurdistan.

For decades, Senator Graham stood with the Kurdish people and strongly advocated for the partnership between the United States and the Kurdistan Region. His friendship, leadership, and unwavering commitment will be remembered with deep gratitude.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who mourn his passing.

May he rest in eternal peace.

The Kurdistan Regional Government has released a new report detailing the scale of attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region between February 28 and April 20, 2026.

Despite its neutrality, the Region has faced over 800 drone and missile attacks, resulting in 20 killed and 123 wounded, along with extensive damage to civilian homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

Erbil was the most heavily impacted, with significant damage also reported across Sulaimani, Halabja, Duhok, and Soran.

The KRG continues to condemn these attacks and calls on the Federal Government in Baghdad to take meaningful action to hold US-sanctioned terrorist groups accountable and prevent further assaults on civilians.
