Rep. Cline on COVID-19 Relief and Restrictions
Speaker Pelosi and Governor Northam need to stop the politics regarding COVID-19 and start helping our small businesses and working families. In a one-two punch today, not only did the Speaker adjourn the House early for the weekend without passing COVID-19 relief, but the Governor also put further restrictions on businesses and infringed on Virginians’ individual liberty.
Honoring Mrs. Mary Woodruff
I took to the House Floor yesterday to recognize Mrs. Mary Woodruff, who turned 104 years young last week. For nearly 70 years, Woodruff's Store: Café & Pie Shop and Mary herself have been a blessing to our community, and I look forward to picking up a piece of that delicious apple crumb sometime soon!
Let's Work
As Governors across the country reimpose COVID-19 restrictions and shutdowns, small businesses and individuals need relief now more than ever. And while Republicans want to work for the American people, House Democrats want to work for their far-left agenda. #LetsWork
Rep. Cline Discusses National Security Concerns Posed by China
As Chinese influence continues to grow, they are becoming more emboldened in their espionage efforts and attempts to steal sensitive information and technology. The House Judiciary Committee needs to hold hearings similar to that of Senators Johnson and Grassley to determine the magnitude of the national security threat China poses.
Rep. Cline Honors HIRE Vets Medallion Award Winners
Each year the U.S. Department of Labor awards the HIRE Vets Medallion to businesses who prioritize hiring and retaining our Nation’s veterans. I was honored to recognize two Sixth District businesses on the Floor who received this distinction – Rubicon Planning of Roanoke and TSSi in Harrisonburg.
Rep. Cline Presents Rusty Nichols the Congressional Gold Medal
Civilian efforts at home during WWII were critical to helping win the War. Yesterday I had the honor of presenting the Congressional Gold Medal to Rusty Nichols of Madison Heights who joined the Civil Air Patrol at just 14 years old in 1944. Founded just days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Civil Air Patrol played a critical role in defending the homeland by participating in coastal patrol operations, convoy escorts, emergency transportation of military personnel, search and rescue missions, and nationwide emergency communications.
Rep. Cline Testifies Before the House Rules Committee
For too long House leadership has waived or ignored rules in an attempt to rush bills to the Floor. I testified before the House Rules Committee today regarding the need to adhere to the House rules, and I will continue to fight for transparency and accountability within the legislative process.
Rep. Cline Honors New Freedom Farm
New Freedom Farm, Inc., in Buchanan is committed to aiding veterans suffering from PTSD, Substance Abuse, and TBI by utilizing therapeutic farming activities. I took to the House Floor today to recognize the tremendous work this group is doing to support our Nation’s servicemembers.
Rep. Cline Discusses Senate Report Concerning Hunter Biden
Could you imagine the uproar from the left if Don Jr. or Ivanka had received a $3.5 million wire transfer from a known Putin associate? The American people deserve to know the extent of Hunter Biden’s disturbing activity from FBI Director Wray and how much Joe Biden knew.
Rep. Cline Recognizes Sweet Briar College on the House Floor
It was a pleasure to recognize Sweet Briar College on the House Floor this week for being named one of the Nation’s most innovative schools. This is yet another shining example of the incredible academic opportunities the Sixth District offers students from across the country.
Rep. Cline Calls For the Restoration of Rule of Law in our Communities
Over the past several months, we’ve heard politicians, pundits, and riot participants vilifying our Nation’s dedicated law enforcement officers. In the wake of the ambush on two LA County Sheriff's Deputies, we must tone down the harmful rhetoric and restore the Rule of Law.
Since the devastating floods in Staunton on August 8, I have witnessed the tragic destruction of homes and businesses across the Queen City, but I have also seen the amazing resilience of this vibrant community. My office has been working to expedite assistance for those affected by the floods, and to hasten the delivery of Federal aid, I recently wrote a letter to the Governor urging the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to quickly designate the City a disaster area.
Rep. Cline Discusses General Flynn
Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee further revealed the abuses by Jim Comey in Operation Crossfire Hurricane, and with the Durham Report expected in the coming months, I look forward to Americans learning the truth about just how far the FBI and the Obama DOJ went in their failed effort to stop President Donald J. Trump.
Rep. Cline Recognizes the Staunton Kiwanis Club
In early spring, the Kiwanis Club of Staunton teamed up with Martin’s Foods to stock the concession stand at Gypsy Hill Park for the little league season opener. But when COVID-19 hit and the season was canceled, the group decided to live out their motto “to serve the kids” in a new way.
Rep. Cline Questions Attorney General Barr
Democrats on the Judiciary Committee continue to participate in partisan political theater rather than serious policy discussions. Today, Attorney General Barr stood firm in defense of our Constitution and the President’s Rule of Law policies while withstanding a barrage of attacks and misleading questions from Committee Democrats.
Rep. Cline Recognizes Capt. Candice Bowen
Congratulations to Capt. Candice Bowen on becoming the first woman to assume command of a Virginia National Guard infantry company. Best of luck Capt. Bowen; Bravo Company is in good hands.
Rep. Cline Statement on H.R. 2
Fixing I-81 is one of my top priorities in Congress. While Democrats forced through a $1.5 trillion infrastructure bill that mandates Green New Deal policies and neglects rural America, the GOP bill I support uses the private sector to create jobs and prioritizes projects in areas like ours.
Rep. Cline Discusses the JUSTICE Act
Rather than play politics, Congress must work together to implement substantive changes to reform policing. That is why I joined my colleagues in introducing the JUSTICE Act, which will increase transparency, accountability, and training within our Nation’s police departments.
Rep. Cline Offers Amendment to Justice in Policing Act
We need to support police reforms instead of the misguided “Defund the Police” movement. Yesterday I offered an amendment to the Democrats’ Justice in Policing Act to remove policies from police union contracts that protect bad cops like the one who killed George Floyd. While my amendment was not accepted, I will continue to work with my colleagues toward a bipartisan consensus on improving law enforcement and ending racism in our communities.
Today the House Judiciary Committee discussed bipartisan ways to improve community policing, but some on the committee actually want to defund the police! Ridiculous! Transparency, training, and accountability are the keys to preventing tragedies like the killing of George Floyd.
The Horowitz report exposed serious flaws in the FISA program, particularly abuses by FBI officials targeting President Donald J. Trump and his team. I support the President’s plan to veto the bill without real reforms, and I’m glad the Speaker sent the bill back to the drawing board!
Rep. Cline Congratulates the Class of 2020
As most schools have opted for virtual graduation ceremonies, I wanted to take a moment to congratulate all of our high school seniors. Whether you’re going to college, serving our Nation in uniform, or entering the work force, I wish you the best of luck on life's next journey.
Rep. Cline Discusses Proxy Voting
Article I, Section 5, Clause 1 of the Constitution states in part that, “a Majority of each [House] shall constitute a Quorum to do Business.” Quorum is interpreted as physical presence, and proxy voting would violate the constitutional standards followed for the last 232 years.
I recently joined ABC 13 - WSET to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and the resources that are available to help individuals and small businesses. As our Nation gets back to work, we can ensure that the American people have the tools they need to triumph over this evolving crisis.
Combating the rise in domestic violence during the pandemic has never been as important as it is right now. That’s why I teamed up with Rep. Lucy McBath to introduce the POWER Act. This bill ensures that victims of abuse have continued access to critical resources during this ongoing crisis.
Rep. Cline Discusses H.R. 266
I voted in favor of H.R. 266 for folks like Lucky and Jennifer Vance. Their Botetourt business needs help, but by the time their Paycheck Protection Program loan was processed, funds were already depleted. Today’s bill will ensure they have access to desperately needed resources.
Rep. Cline Volunteers at Blue Ridge Area Food Bank
This week, I joined the incredible volunteers at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Verona. If you can do so safely, I encourage you to donate your time and/or supplies to facilities like this to ensure they remain open in these tough times. To find a food bank near you, click here: https://tinyurl.com/yd4towz3
Today, I joined the amazing volunteers at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Verona to help collect goods for those in need. While I know these are trying times, I’d encourage you to donate to your local food bank if you have extra canned goods. Now more than ever we must support our neighbors.
During this COVID-19 crisis, I know how stressful it has been for parents trying to juggle health and safety issues, family financial and employment challenges, and also ensuring our kids learn while staying at home. As I’ve visited elementary schools this past year, I’ve enjoyed reading “House Mouse, Senate Mouse” to students across the Sixth District. I hope this post can give parents a five-minute break while your kids get a little information about how Congress works. Please know you and your families are in our thoughts and prayers every day, and don’t hesitate to contact my office if I can be of any assistance.
There are steps each one of us can take to help slow the spread of COVID-19: stay home when you’re sick, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your face, and disinfect frequently used objects. For more information, please visit coronavirus.gov.
