The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management's (EM) mission is to address the nation’s Cold War environmental legacy resulting from five decades of nuclear weapons production and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. This legacy includes some of the world’s most dangerous radioactive sites with large amounts of radioactive wastes, spent nuclear fuel, excess plutonium and uranium, thousands of contaminated facilities, and contaminated soil and groundwater. Created in 1989, EM has the responsibility for completing the cleanup of this Cold War legacy and managing the remaining nuclear materials. As the largest environmental cleanup program in the world, EM has been charged with the responsibility of cleaning up 107 sites across the country whose area is equal to the combined area of Rhode Island and Delaware. EM has made substantial progress in nearly every area of nuclear waste cleanup and has completed cleanup at 91 of these sites.

Mission: To complete the safe cleanup of the environmental legacy brought about from decades of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research.

Large containment shells commonly used in civilian power reactors were developed after the Savannah River Plant was constructed, and the SRP reactors were too large to add shells retroactively. The site was able to apply confinement techniques including new filters on the exhaust ducts and stacks which were installed in the early 1960s.

EM has removed approximately half of the uranium-233 inventory that is stored in ORNL's Building 3019, the oldest operating nuclear facility in the world. EM and its contractor Isotek have partnered with nuclear innovation company TerraPower. The partnership is eliminating the inventory and significantly boosting the availability of key medical isotopes needed for next-generation cancer treatment research. Workers are processing the low dose portion of the inventory now, and they will begin processing the high dose portion this fall. #WorldCancerDay

Our Story

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (EM) mission is to address the nation’s Cold War environmental legacy resulting from five decades of nuclear weapons production and government-sponsored nuclear energy research.

AMERICA'S ENERGY NEEDS: Who out there can answer these technical questions? 1. Can current fission reactors be updated or replaced with Thorium or other elements in lieu of uranium and plutonium? 2. Are there any new designs coming for fusion reactors using beryllium or other materials? It's going to take another 5 years of research using current laser or magnetic confinement technology just to break even. 3. What's going on with cold fusion? There is a lot of world wide research going on. The E-CAT and other devices have been predicted to be released but this is going on for 10 years or more. Everything is so secretive and painfully frustrating in the lack of new information. 4. I am a big proponent of saving money from imports on foreign fuel and use of electric cars and solar housing wherever possible. The new corporate competition on designing better batteries for cars is wonderful. I would like to see more promotional programs in battery backup systems for housing - not just photovoltaic power generation.
