The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Community Revitalization helps communities grow in ways that expand economic opportunity, protect public health and the environment, and create and enhance the places that people love.
Technical Assistance: We offer technical assistance to tribal, state, regional, and local governments through several programs. Many of these projects produce reports that can be helpful to other communities. Learn more about these programs and find links to reports at www.epa.gov/smartgrowth/smart-growth-technical-assistance-programs.
Publications: We have many publications to help communities make more efficient and equitable development decisions. See the complete list at www.epa.gov/smartgrowth/smart-growth-publications
Research: We conduct research on a variety of topics, including rural smart growth, business and economic development, water quality and green infrastructure, transportation and air quality, climate change and energy, brownfields, infill, and more.
Tools: We have several tools to help communities revitalize, including a step-by-step guide to building a place-based economic development strategy, a self-assessment for rural communities, a smart location calculator, geospatial data, a water quality scorecard, and many other practical resources. A complete list is available at www.epa.gov/smartgrowth/smart-growth-tools
Grants: We occasionally offer grants to support activities that improve the quality of development and protect human health and the environment. Grants announcements are posted at www.epa.gov/smartgrowth/epa-smart-growth-grants-and-other-funding and on www.grants.gov.
