Alfonso Murrietta, a Supervisory CBP Officer assigned to the Port of Tucson, lost a battle with complications from COVID yesterday. He will join CBP Officers Omar Palmer, Richard McCoy, C.K. In this time of national struggle and pain, we share in the loss as well. We have lost two of our own thus far from the COVID-19 pandemic, and while we can hope that we will not lose more, our grave fear is that this is not the end.

Keep a kind thought for our essential employees, law enforcement, fire, ems, nurses, military, store clerks, bank tellers, custodians, sanitation workers, and all those that risk so that we may continue to live and to thrive once again in the fullness of time.

This past week has resulted in the loss of four of our nation’s peace officers. Deputy Stephen Reece of the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee, Investigator Cecil Ridley of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia, Police Officer Rasheen McClain of the Detroit Police Department, and last night Sheriff John Williams Sr of Lowndes County, Alabama all gave their last breath serving their communities, and their families will have empty seats for Thanksgiving. Please join us in offering condolences and what support we can to their survivors.

Detective Jorge DelRio

Dayton, Ohio mourns the loss of one of its protectors. Detective Jorge DelRio was shot and killed while attempting to serve a warrant with the DEA task force.

Lynden, Washington is also suffering the loss of its Police Chief today. Interim Police Chief Michael Knapp, who had already retired from the police force in Ferndale, WA in 2016 and returned to public service when his community called, was struck by a vehicle as he was crossing the roadway in Lynden. He was flown to Seattle for emergency medical care and succumbed to his wounds in the hospital there.

The Office of Field Operations Honor Guard recognizes the loss of these two officers, and extends its condolences to the families and coworkers of Detective DelRio and Chief Knapp.

Police Officer Jonathan Diaz

There are no words to describe the sadness that is a police-on-police shooting, where the need to take life is completely absent.

Police Officer Jonathan Diaz of the Lemoore Police department in California is the latest victim of one of these horrific situations. He intervened in a violent domestic situation where the suspect was an investigator from another agency, and after removing the female victim from the scene, he returned and was shot by the suspect, who then committed suicide.

There are no words to reduce the feeling of despair and hopelessness which lie upon both of those agencies today. There are what-ifs and the perpetual question of why, but at the end we can only grieve the loss of our defenders and public servants.

Over the weekend, we said goodbye to USBP Agent Robert Hotten, who died last week south of Tucson. While we were there, we became aware of the loss of Deputy Matt Jones of the Falls County Sheriff’s Office in Texas, struck by a vehicle hydroplaning on the roadway. The next day, Trooper Peter Stephan of the Indiana State Police was killed in a motor vehicle accident, and Captain Albert Torres of the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation suffered a fatal heart attack while patrolling in the vicinity of the Saddleridge Fire in the San Fernando Valley.

Additionally, on Monday, Police Officer Thomas Bomba of the Montgomery County Police Department died, unfortunately of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound while on duty and a New York Police Department Sergeant fatally shot himself in Queens. We recognize these deaths as an all-too-frequent price paid by our law enforcement brethren, and want to pay our respects to them as well.

Please keep all these public servants and their families in your thoughts.

Unfortunately, we have fallen behind in marking the toll that law enforcement across this nation pays in lives as we strive to keep the peace.

In Texas, Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was approached from behind and shot several times.

In Florida, Trooper Tracy Vickers was killed in a motor vehicle crash.

In Meade County, Kentucky, Deputy Chris Halsey was killed by a heart attack during a struggle with a suspect.

In Louisiana, Captain Vinny Liberto of the Mandeville Police Department was shot after a vehicle pursuit.

This is a week of pain across the nation for families, agencies, and communities.

Today we recognize the passing of Maine State Police Detective Ben Campbell, who was killed this morning by a passing truck while assisting a motorist who had slid off the roadway. As the truck approached, a tire separated from the front axle and struck Campbell, who was on his way to a training class when he saw the stranded motorist on the shoulder of the roadway.

This brings the total number of State Police officers killed in the last seven days to three, and should remind us all to be cautious when approaching an emergency vehicle which has its lights on.

Detective Campbell left a wife and 6-month old son, and we mourn with them and with the Maine State Police.

Heaven One gained a true warrior and public servant yesterday. Juan Cancino was a member of Blue Knights New York 2 chapter and I have attached a bio of Gunny Cancino that doesn’t mention he also worked Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks. RIP......... Senior Customs Inspector Juan Cancino came to U.S. Customs after a full career in the U.S. Armed Services. He spent 12 years with, and retired from, the Marine Corps after serving 12 years in the Army. By the end of his military career, Cancino had attended numerous schools and received many prestigious awards. U.S. Army Juan Cancino's military career began on October 17, 1966, when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served three consecutive tours in Vietnam as a reconnaissance sergeant and spent time in Germany and Italy. His Army schooling included parachute, pathfinder, reconnaissance, ranger, and special operations warfare at Fort Benning, Ga. He attended the 7th Army Staff NCO Academy at Bad Toez, Germany, and the Special Security and Intelligence Agency School at Fort Gordon, Ga. U.S. Marine Corps In October 1978, he transferred from the Army to the Marine Corps. While with the Marines, Cancino saw action in Lebanon, Grenada, and Panama. He was also stationed at Camp Lejune, N.C.; Camp Pendleton, Calif.; the Pentagon; and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. During his career with the Marines, Cancino served as an artillery scout observer and fire support operations chief, interrogator-translator, and counterintelligence special agent. His Marine Corps training included the counterintelligence special agents academy and interrogator-translator and strategic de-briefing courses at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; and intelligence analysis training in Norfolk, Va. He also attended the staff non-commissioned officers' academy at Quantico, Va. Cancino retired from the Marine Corps in August 1990. U.S. Customs Service In October 1991, Cancino joined the U.S. Customs Service as an inspector at JFK International Airport. He soon joined the contraband enforcement team and was the first inspector to be selected for the aircraft search team, where he made several seizures of drugs and currency. He wrote an aircraft search manual for inspectors. He is now a supervisory inspector in baggage and continues to make seizures. Military decorations Cancino's decorations include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, four Bronze Stars with "V" device, a Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, and two Air Medals with "V" device. He also received the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and other service and foreign awards.
