Capital Area Reach The Capital Area REACH Program is committed to helping young people in the Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC, metropolitan area become successful in school, work, and the community.

For more than eight years, with caring adult volunteers and employers, the Capital Area REACH Program has offered young people positive developmental experiences to teach them the skills they need to overcome life challenges and achieve positive outcomes. REACH strives to help young people in the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, area become successful in school, work, and the community. Our partners include local employers, businesses, and community volunteers. REACH has partnered with CustomED to offer real-world experience in leadership, problem solving, communication, and teamwork. CustomED is responsible for the development and implementation of our a job training curriculum that teaches students how to succeed in work and the community.

Mission: The REACH Program helps young people: ■Mature personally and gain life skills; ■Increase job-related competencies through instruction, activities, and work experiences; ■Learn more about potential careers; and ■Develop commitment to their communities. To accomplish these goals throughout the year, the REACH Program provides youth with substantive opportunities to: ■Develop personal relationships with caring adults; ■Contribute to the community through service; ■Work and succeed on the job; and ■Grow personally, emotionally, and academically.

On January 11th, CustomED facilitated this year’s first REACH Job Training Session, which focused REACH Session1 Photo #3-croppedon preparing DC-area college students for the current job market. Students started the day with Rusty McCarty who taught the art of introductions. Students’ problem solving skills were challenged in a group activity. Six teams completed to create the tallest platform from materials such as plates, cups, and rubber bands. Rubber duckies were place on top and the team that “rescued” the most ducks won! Next up were sessions on professional etiquette, resume development, and LinkedIn profiles.

DREACH Session1 Photo #2-croppeduring the afternoon, students tackled personal finances and budgeting, delved into time management and STEM careers, and sharpened their presentation skills by creating and presenting entertaining BuzzFeed-style lists of workplace dos and don’ts. Teams developed an nonprofit companies that they will manage throughout the remainder of the program. At the end of the session, everyone had a chance to reflect upon their lives and plan ahead for next month’s session (February 8th)!

4-5 volunteers are needed on Wednesday April 10th from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. for food preparation.The volunteers will be needed to facilitate the following:
*Sort all food items donated from Capital Area Food Bank (discarding rotten, moldy, and expired food).
*Set aside all pork and pork bi-product items.
*Package and label donated food items according family size.
*Be able to lift approximately 30 pounds.
