WLPCS opened in 2006 with 179 students in grades five through seven; we have added a grade each year and graduated our first class of seniors on June 8, 2012. Our first location was in Christ Church of Washington at 3855 Massachusetts Avenue (two blocks west of Washington National Cathedral). In 2008 we added a second campus for our eighth and ninth graders at 4715 16th Street on the corner of Dec
atur (just south of Carter Barron), and in 2009 we moved our entire Middle School (grades 5-8) to 4115 16th St. NW on the corner of Upshur, just a half-mile from our Upper School. In 2010 we added an additional campus for our upper school at 4501 16th Street NW on the corner of Allison. We now enroll 600 students and plan to house the entire school in a permanent site for the 2013-14 school year.
Washington Latin Faculty - most of us!
Faculty Field Day! But we earned it - meetings this week with our departments, divisions, campus teams, and as the entire Latin faculty. We said good bye to those who are leaving us and stepped back to look at the year’s challenges and accomplishments. And THEN we played and feasted outside! Happy Summer everybody!!
Class of 2024, we miss you already! A perfect day for Graduation, Latin’s 13th! But against type, this is class is lucky - as have we been to watch them grow through the past eight years. CONGRATULATIONS! 🎉❤️🎉 Sumus Leones 4eva!!
Valediction and Senior Luncheon and Roast today, with dancing, recitations, awards and of course farewells. Seniors and families, see you at Monday’s graduation!
LION DAY 2024! Field day for 9-12, friendly, fun advisory competition before final exams begin tomorrow. Lower stakes - like musical chairs… or maybe also high stakes!
Latin’s Got Talent! 2nd Street Show today - plenty of acts, standing room only crowd!
Hard Knock Life? Not when you’re watching the final night of Cooper’s sold out run of Annie Jr! Stellar cast, crew, direction and audience! We all left fully dressed with a smile 😁🥰
ECLIPSE! We were lucky today to experience this phenomenon, with DC near the 100 mile wide Path of Totality. All our students and faculty at both campuses headed outside just after 3pm with our cool glasses to witness the event. Next total eclipse visible in the US will be in 2044!
Friday fun for our MS girls basketball team with some robotics in the gym today, thanks to a special visit from the Mystics! 🏀🦾🤖
“Rester c’est exister mais voyager c’est vivre.” Latin students (and a few lucky faculty chaperones) made the very most of spring break last week. On their trip to France, they took in the sites of beautiful and history rich Paris. They then traveled to the northern city of Metz, where they stayed with families and visited to a French lycée the next day. To travel is indeed to live! (PS ready to travel next year? Join the interest meeting for our 2025 trips later this month!)
Senior Recitations - “to learn by heart” - a tradition of memorizing a meaningful passage and so to take it into your heart. Each senior selected a passage from all they read during 12th grade and recited it - no notes! - before their peers and teachers in the Diana E. Smith Library. Selections ranged from Plato to Anna Julia Cooper to bell hooks to Martin Luther King, Jr to Shakespeare to Pablo Neruda … and more. Cheers to our Class of 2024!
Happy Wellness Wednesday! Students at Cooper and 2nd got to choose their sessions. Lots of creative fun on campus and off!

Above are some books written by Black authors that Latin’s students have been exploring in their English classes throughout the year. Unfortunately, Black works, especially those by Black women, are often overlooked. Let’s all work to improve that!
Latin celebrates Black History month in lots of different ways, such decorating our doors and posting banners in the hallways, recognizing legendary African American musicians in the Daily Bulletin, and honoring the accomplishments and progress of students during our quarterly assembly. During the assembly last week, merits were given to students who had exemplified the tenets of Hip Hop!
As part of BLM Club’s Insta. Takeover we would like to spotlight one of this year’s new courses: Introduction to African American Studies! It is taught by Mr. Wills (middle school Ancient Civilizations) and Mr. Bhuva (upper school World History and AP HuG). This course, inspired by AP African American Studies, follows the journey of African Americans from the Bantu people’s ancient migration across southern Africa to the artists of the Harlem Renaissance to the Black Lives Matter Movement. Throughout their study, students are guided by key questions such as, “How do you maintain and assert your humanity in a dehumanizing world?”
Which foods grow your nails faster? Want to know which home surface makes for the best bacterial dance floor? Will yeast feast on sugar (who could blame it)?
Our middle schoolers found the answer to these and hundreds of questions like them, showcasing their research at today's Science Fair. Congrats to the students and thank you to the judges!
Have you heard? SNOW DAY TODAY (Friday 1/19/24)!!! Enjoy the ❄️❄️ or being cozy inside with a good book or cute pup!

Before the rains hit, our Geology students took advantage of Monday's beautiful weather to explore different rock formations to better understand the region's geologic history.
Tuesday 1/24 - Rain and high winds mean no after school activities at Latin today. So get home and snuggle those pets waiting for you!!!
Welcome back, Lions! We hope everyone's break was restful and rejuvenating!
What an honor to host so many colleges today for Instant Decision Day! Congratulations to all of our seniors who participated and to the CCO for organizing!
We are grateful today - and everyday - for our wonderful Latin community! Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday full family, friends and a few beautiful surprises, like this doe grazing just off North Capitol between our two campuses. Happy Thanksgiving!
We salute our veterans, including those now serving the common good on our faculty. Adele Mujal (US Army), Nate Campbell (US Air Force) and Jennifer Thorpe-Lewis (US Air Force) paused during today’s faculty meetings to demonstrate the proper salute form. To these three and all the vets in our community, we thank you for your service. Aim High and HOOAH!!
The annual fall concert was held last night at 2nd Street - wonderful performances by our Jazz Band, 7/8 Choir, Latin Voices, and Honors Choir! And those student intros!! Music + comedy = happiness ❤️

Testing, testing…. Lots of that going on lately: national Latin Exam last week, SAT today, AND, more dramatically, balsa wood bridge testing. Check out how much weight our Physics students’ bridges could bear before cracking up (link in the bio)!
It’s almost time! The final edits are being made and the spring musical, The Gospel at Colonus, will premier on Friday, June 4th on YouTube. Support the hard work of the cast and crew and consider donating today! Visit the Theatre Arts page for updates and to donate. https://latinpcs.org/theatre-arts/
Day 169 - On this dark and stormy night, we might take a minute to appreciate having the “Dodge Ball in the gym option” on the menu for tomorrow, as we did a couple days ago while waiting for the bus. (Go ahead, ask Mr Eleby-El!)
Dr. Smith steps down as Principal at Washington Latin after 13 years this June. In May, we came together in a magical tent on our field to appreciate her, including announcing two ways we will pay tribute to her legacy building the school's academic program, faculty, and culture.
