Did you know? 🇺🇸🇪🇸

Long before Pocahontas saved John Smith, a similar tale unfolded in Florida. In 1528, Juan Ortiz, an 18-year-old Spanish sailor from Seville, was captured by the Tocobaga tribe near present-day Tampa. While three of his companions were executed, Ortiz was sentenced to a slow death over hot embers — until the chief’s daughter, Princess Hirrihigua, intervened.

She secretly helped Ortiz escape to a rival tribe led by Mucozo, where he lived for over a decade, learned the local language, and adapted to their customs. When Hernando de Soto arrived in 1539, Ortiz became his interpreter and guide, bridging cultures and surviving against incredible odds.

¿Sabías que...? 🇺🇸🇪🇸

Did you know? 🇺🇸🇪🇸

The first Europeans to see the Grand Canyon were part of a Spanish expedition in 1540, led by García López de Cárdenas under Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. Guided by Hopi leaders, a small group of soldiers reached the canyon’s edge after a 20-day journey. From the rim, they saw the Colorado River far below—but dramatically underestimated its scale.

Three men attempted to climb down but turned back after descending about a third of the way, realizing the river was far wider and more inaccessible than expected. Believing the area to be impassable and of little strategic value, the expedition moved on—leaving the Grand Canyon largely unexplored by Europeans for over 200 years.

Did you know? 🇺🇸🇪🇸

Spain played a key financial role in the American Revolution.

Spanish silver and funds from across the Spanish Empire—including contributions from places like Havana—helped supply the American cause and support the final victory at Yorktown in 1781.
