On This Day in History!

It was on this day 70 years ago that Dwight D. Eisenhower visited #Iceland. Eisenhower visited as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) for NATO and met with then Foreign Minister Bjarni Benediktsson. Eisenhower would visit Iceland again in 1955 as President, the first time a sitting U.S. President visited Iceland.

Iceland has successfully moved away from fossil fuels and shifted to 100% electricity production from renewable sources.

The island nation has developed high-tech greenhouses to grow organic vegetables and embraced sustainable fish farming, ecotourism, breakthrough processes for carbon capture and disposal, and efforts to restore the forests that were lost in earlier centuries.

We are all moved into our new US Embassy Reykjavik Iceland, and we were excited and honored to greet the Icelandic Ambassador to the United States, Bergd铆s Ellertsd贸ttir.

"We are blessed to welcome Ambassador Bergd铆s to America's new home in Iceland," said Ambassador Jeffrey Ross Gunter. "The relationship between America and Iceland has never been stronger, in part because of her tireless work with her tremendous team in the Embassy of Iceland Washington DC."

Besides the extensive tour, Ambassador Bergd铆s graciously met with our tremendous team member, Helga Magn煤sd贸ttir, in Cultural Affairs, sharing information about the importance of Disability Rights in America and here in Iceland.

In addition, Ambassador Bergd铆s met with Deputy Chief of Mission Michelle Yerkin, discussing Michelles's Native American heritage and the importance of women leadership around the world.

A wonderful visit and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the tremendous relationship between two historic free and democratic Allies, #America and #Iceland.

The Icelandic Christmas period is an intriguing mixture of religious practice and traditional folklore, beginning on 23 December and ending on Epiphany, 6 January.

As many countries do, Iceland celebrates Christmas mostly with good food and gifts to loved ones, but unlike most countries that have a single Father Christmas / Santa Claus character, Icelandic children are fortunate enough to be visited by 13 Yule Lads.

Icelandic children place a shoe in their bedroom window each evening in the 13 days leading to Christmas. Every night one Yuletide lad visits, leaving sweets and small gifts or rotting potatoes, depending on how that particular child has behaved on the preceding day.

Today on December 21 Gluggag忙gir Window-Peeper came to town.

Katr铆n Sigur冒ard贸ttir & 脰rn Arnar, Honorary Consuls of Iceland in Minnesota

This week we are very happy to introduce our two fantastic Honorary Consuls in Minnesota.

脰rn Arnar has been Iceland麓s Honorary Consul General in the state for the past 25 years and Katr铆n Sigur冒ard贸ttir has been Honorary Consul for 3 years.

A part from covering the State of Minnesota they also cover Iowa and South Dakota and other surrounding areas if needed. There are many Icelanders and Western Icelanders in Minnesota that they enjoy helping out.

In addition to promoting Icelandic culture and roots in Minnesota and assisting Icelanders in the area, 脰rn has been involved in work with the Icelandic Manuscript Institute at the University of Iceland (Stofnun 脕rna Magn煤ssonar 铆 铆slenskum fr忙冒um) in locating, preserving and digitizing all the literary material in books and other written material that the Icelandic immigrants brought with them. That way it can be made available to everyone, spreading the Icelandic literary culture.

Exclusive: Kids catch and spread coronavirus half as much as adults, Iceland study confirms

馃敩馃A new Icelandic study on the coronavirus shows that younger children are less likely to get sick or to infect others. 馃馃敩

National Geographic was given exclusive access to the results from the study. Icelandic researchers monitored every adult and child in the country who was quarantined after potentially being exposed this spring, using contact tracing and genetic sequencing to trace links between various outbreak clusters, and found that children under 15 are half as likely as adults to be infected, and only half as likely as adults to transmit the virus to others.

For more information click the link below 馃憞

Big decisions around COVID-19 and children have been heavy on politics and short on science. New large-scale studies are changing that.

The Icelandic Yule Lads are coming to town! 鉂勶笍

Iceland鈥檚 Christmas Yule Lads are a staple in Iceland鈥檚 rich historic folklore. During each of the 13 nights leading up to Christmas, a Yule Lad comes down from the mountains to bring children gifts or candy 鈥 and sometimes even to play pranks. Each Yule Lad has unique characteristics, like the Sausage-Swiper who is known to hide in the rafters and steal sausages or Door-Slammer who stomps around and slams doors, keeping everyone awake.

Before they go to sleep, kids take one of their best shoes and leave near an open window. Come morning the shoe will contain a small gift from the Yule Lad that arrived on that night. However, this only works if the child has been good 鈥 if he or she has been bad, the shoe will contain only one lonely potato.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the Yule Lads arriving on the following dates:

December 12 鈥 Sheep-Cote Clod
December 13 鈥 Gully Gawk鈽冿笍
