Pathways Ambassador’s met with City Administrator Kevin Donahue and the Director of Gun Violence Prevention Linda Harllee Harper today to discuss their concerns and solutions for problems they have identified in their communities.

As Director Harper said today “this room embodies black excellence” and that’s exactly what we all experienced as the ambassadors affluently presented their plans and displayed their passion and leadership for making a difference across DC.

The District is not alone in its fight to combat senseless gun violence. At last weeks Don’t Look Away rally with Mom’s Demand Action, we met Dawn Thomas who was holding a painting of her son Brandon Braswell whose life was taken by gun violence.

Brandon was just 25 years-old when he was gunned down while he was walking to his car in Temple Hills, Maryland. He leaves behind a now 15 year old daughter. How many more?

June is month, but the truth is that EVERY month, EVERY member of our community plays an important role in maintaining and advancing peacemaking efforts.

How will you be advancing peace this summer?

Like many Violence Interrupters, on top of his day-to-day intervention work, Bill combines his individual talents and passion with community organizing to accomplish amazing things!

You may have heard about the Shoot Hoops Not Gunz initiative that connected District youth to basketball skills training this past summer? That’s Bill’s vision.

Bill also recently hosted his 2nd annual Safe Halloween Movie Night for kids from the Paradise and Mayfair communities in partnership with .

If you see Bill out in the community, thank him for his work! 💪🏾 ☮️

Scenes from yesterday’s safe passage breakfast distribution at Anacostia High School.

We all know what it feels like to have a rough weekday morning..

…now imagine that right before you enter school a friendly face greets you, shares some motivational words, and offers you some breakfast.

Little touch points make a big difference. They tell students we see you, we are rooting for you, and we are here for you.

This cohort of Pathways Ambassadors walked in to ONSE headquarters not knowing what to expect, but kept an open mind.

They were pushed out of their comfort zones and challenged to transform their way of thinking.

These eight weeks weren’t without their tests, but this Cohort persevered.

And through this experience, they bonded, developed skills, and set new personal goals and intentions.

This is just the beginning.

On the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, the Family and Survivor Support team brought together families impacted by homicide for an intimate memorial event.

ONSE Restorative Justice partner, Dr. Ivy Hylton, led a healing circle with family members, which focused on celebrating the lives of those lost, offering peer support, and learning self-care and coping skills. A catered dinner, balloon release, and candlelight vigil followed the healing circle.

We honor the 11 lives these 8 families lost and all lives lost to homicide in the District - they were sons, daughters, parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, siblings, neighbors, colleagues, and friends, and they will be forever missed.

To those grieving — we see you and we are here for you.

Entrepreneurship builds wealth, enables individuals to pursue their passions, and drives social change. That’s why every Pathways cohort spends time exploring entrepreneurship and learning the basics on starting, operating, and growing a business.

Over the course of several weeks, each Ambassador prepares a business plan, which they present to guest judges at a Business Pitch Competition. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners receive cash prizes for seed funding.

Thank you, , for joining Ambassadors from Cohort 7 of the Pathways Program for a conversation on equity and access to workforce development, entrepreneurship, employment, and affordable housing opportunities.

Transitional employment programs play a vital role in connecting residents who lack work experience or have multiple barriers to employment to career pathways, but their success is dependent on strong partnerships with employers.

One of the best ways to foster mutual insight, establish common purpose, and forge shared frames of reference is to create space for dialogue.

We are united in the Pathways program’s common purpose of INVESTING IN PEOPLE.

ONSE Violence Intervention Case Managers joined the dynamic Thandoor Miller for a powerful training on youth development today.

ONSE views continuing education as an essential activity for high quality service delivery under its violence intervention contracts and across all of its programs. Training investments allow staff to acquire new knowledge, refine skills, and build community with other violence intervention and prevention professionals.

ONSE is excited to announce that the ONSE Leadership Academy (OLA) Team is growing! This coming school year, OLA will be expanding to two new schools - H.D. Woodson STEM High School in Ward 7 and the Paul Public Charter School in Ward 4 - as well as continuing to serve Anacostia High School in Ward 8.

The OLA team focuses on helping high school students improve their “ABCs” - Attendance, Behavior, Credits, and Safety. We believe that all students should have the opportunity thrive in school and in life, and we know that a sense of safety and trusted adults are critical to acheiving that success.

Today the team is in a planning session to prepare for the 2021-2022 school year, which begins on August 30th.

Today the ONSE Pathways Program attended a Leadership Retreat designed to grow their skill sets pertaining to working with this unique population.

Mayor Bowser’s proposed FY22 budget presents ONSE with the opportunity to intensify and expand several of our programs, including the Pathways program.

This will mean:
✅ More at-risk young men receiving life-saving interventions
✅ More trauma survivors receiving culturally competent compassionate healing services, and
✅ More money in the pockets of individuals who lack stable employment and have families to support
