In Mali, USADF focuses on agricultural production and processing to improve food security and rural incomes. In Bamako and surrounding towns, soy-based products for poultry feed are in high demand, yet very few agriculture enterprises are poised to meet that demand.

With a US$180K grant, Kafoyiriwaso, an agro-processing cooperative specialized in soy-based products, procured and installed a soybean processing unit, attained local certification of soy cake and oil, and developed a distribution and delivery channel for its soy products.
In year two of project implementation, Kafoyiriwaso exceeded all targets by more than 200 percent and increased its base revenue 10-fold. It secured follow-on funding from the Government of Mali through PROCEJ to acquire a second soy press that will double production and sales.

In honor of Feed the Future week, we are celebrating our nearly 15-year partnership with the Government of Uganda that has expanded the operations of more than 115 farmer cooperatives, producer associations, and small-scale businesses.

One of the agricultural enterprises we've jointly funded is Zirobwe Agaliawamu Agribusiness Training Association (ZAABTA), a maize, beans, and rice-producing cooperative in Uganda's Luwero District. In 2018, USADF provided ZAABTA US$243,000 to purchase processing and value addition equipment and buy produce from farmers.

Within three years, ZAABTA increased its sales revenue by more than 20-fold, going from annual revenue of almost US$74,000 to more than US$1.5 million. Within the same period, the incomes of the nearly 4,900 farmers in ZAABTA increased almost 23-fold.

Kiru II Fadama Farmers’ Cooperative Society (KFFCS), a sorghum-producing cooperative in Nigeria, struggled with reduced yields and inadequate inputs and access to markets, resulting in low per capita incomes. With a US$177K grant funding from USADF, KFFCS constructed a 400 ton-capacity warehouse, acquired two solar-powered mills, and modernized its operations.

As a result, KFFCS scaled up its sorghum production from 30 hectares to 150 hectares, and increased yields per area cultivated by 100 percent and its sales revenues by 300 percent, while members’ incomes increased by over 120 percent.

Food insecurity exacerbated by erratic rainfall in Turkana County led Natiira Ateni Self Help Group, a pastoralist community group in Kakuma, to switch to agricultural activities. However, inadequate rainfall often led to low production and crop failure. USADF invested US$95,000 for Natiira to build a borehole that provides a consistent supply of water for agriculture production using a drip irrigation system. As a result, with USADF support, Natiira increased its food production by 20%.
