The 2026 statewide assessment results are in, and DC students made gains in English language arts and math for the fourth year in a row.

Among students in grades 3 through 8 and high school:

✅ELA proficiency reached 39.6%, up 2 percentage points and the highest since 2015.
✅Math proficiency reached 28.5%, up 2.1 percentage points.

Proficiency means a student met or exceeded grade-level expectations on the statewide assessment.

The progress reached across every part of the District. ELA increased in five out of seven grade bands and in most wards. Math increased in six out of seven grade bands and all eight wards.

The gains are encouraging. The overall proficiency rates also reveal that the work is far from over. As students return for the 2026-27 school year, DC is focused on protecting this progress and building momentum to prepare every student accelerating learning.
