From the PDKI policy forum at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. — “Iran at a Crossroads: Kurdish Leadership in Shaping Democratic Transition.”
The opening remarks highlighted the importance of sustained dialogue between Kurdish political forces and the Washington policy community, the role of the Kurdish people in discussions on Iran’s political future, concern over continued Iranian cross-border attacks against Kurdish political organizations and civilian communities, and the need for stronger coordination among the political parties of Iranian Kurdistan.
Held on the 81st anniversary of PDKI, the forum was intended to contribute to a broader and continuing policy discussion on Kurdistan, Iran, and the prospects for democratic transition.

On September 16th, the fourth anniversary of the death of Jina Amini, Iranian Kurdistan answered with a general strike called by the Alliance of Political Parties in Iranian Kurdistan.

From Mahabad, Bukan and Saqqez to Sanandaj, Marivan, Oshnavieh and Piranshahr, businesses and markets shut down across Kurdish cities.

The scale of participation also shows the continued organizational reach of Kurdish political parties inside Iranian Kurdistan. Despite decades of repression and intense pressure, they retain the ability to mobilize and coordinate collective action across multiple cities, while Kurdish communities continue to demonstrate their ability to organize, mobilize, and act collectively on a large scale.

At PDKI’s 81st anniversary policy forum, “Iran at a Crossroads,” in Washington, D.C., Kurdish political representatives and regional experts discussed Iran’s future, the prospects for democratic transition, and the central role of the Kurdish people.

The discussion underscored that external pressure alone cannot deliver democratic change. Kurdish unity, internal organization, federalism, national rights, and direct engagement with Washington are essential to building a credible and inclusive alternative.

The message was clear: the Kurds and the other Marginalized Nations of Iran must be equal political stakeholders in shaping the country’s future—not an afterthought once a transition begins.

In his message to PDKI’s 81st anniversary gathering in Washington, D.C., Secretary-General Mustafa Hijri emphasized that Iran’s democratic future must recognize its multinational reality and guarantee the national rights and meaningful participation of the Kurdish people and other Marginalized Nations.

He stressed that federalism, shared political sovereignty, equality, and voluntary coexistence are essential to building a stable and democratic future.
