Pay attention to fire prevention™," we will be sharing fire safety tips and information about our Office of Fire Protection and their ongoing work to prevent tragic fire-related accidents at our diplomatic facilities overseas.
Cooking fires constitute 15% of annual Department of State incidents. To enhance safety, ensure accessible fire extinguishers in Posts and residences. Follow these key safety tips to prevent fires:
- Never leave cooking unattended, as fires can ignite in seconds.
- Keep combustible materials (e.g., paper towels, potholders, curtains, and food items) away from hot surfaces and flames.
- Maintain cleanliness in cooking areas, including surfaces, ovens, microwaves, and appliances—regularly clean kitchen hood exhausts and vents.
- Always turn off appliances before leaving the house or going to bed. At work, switch off appliances when done and before departing for the day.
