#StateOBO is celebrating National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)'s Fire Prevention Week with our Office of Fire Protection. For this year's campaign, "Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™," we will be sharing fire safety tips and information about our Office of Fire Protection and their ongoing work to prevent tragic fire-related accidents at our diplomatic facilities overseas.
Cooking fires constitute 15% of annual Department of State incidents. To enhance safety, ensure accessible fire extinguishers in Posts and residences. Follow these key safety tips to prevent fires:
- Never leave cooking unattended, as fires can ignite in seconds.
- Keep combustible materials (e.g., paper towels, potholders, curtains, and food items) away from hot surfaces and flames.
- Maintain cleanliness in cooking areas, including surfaces, ovens, microwaves, and appliances—regularly clean kitchen hood exhausts and vents.
- Always turn off appliances before leaving the house or going to bed. At work, switch off appliances when done and before departing for the day.
