On December 7th, OBO team members Rick Sullivan, Stephanie Leedom, and Marcy Trepke, alongside U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Ambassador to Namibia Randy W. Berry, U.S. Mission personnel, and Namibian officials, marked the successful completion of the new U.S. embassy in Windhoek with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The embassy will serve as a hub for diplomatic activities and cultural connections that reaffirm the strong partnership between our two nations.

Situated on a 12.8-acre site, the embassy seamlessly combines U.S. architectural expertise with Namibian traditions and materials, featuring a red-sandstone exterior inspired by local landmarks. It incorporates advanced energy-efficiency systems, including photovoltaic canopies that supply approximately half of the Chancery's energy needs, along with passive environmental strategies and drought-tolerant landscaping that align with Windhoek's sustainable water treatment program and respect the adjacent Klein Windhoek floodplain.

As part of the "Embassy Effect," the project invested around $17 million into the local economy and employed over 2,000 Namibians during its construction phase.

This week marks Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week. This region is home to some of the most crucial resources for mitigating and adapting to the impacts of the climate crisis. Together with our regional partners, OBO is building and revitalizing facilities that exemplify climate resilience, harness clean energy sources, utilize rainwater harvesting systems, and uphold responsible environmental stewardship.

The newly completed US Embassy Guatemala sets a remarkable standard for our work in the region with notable sustainability features, including a 30% reduction in energy consumption and photovoltaics contributing over ten percent of the chancery's energy needs. An on-site wastewater treatment plant ensures that irrigation and cooling tower replenishment won't deplete potable water resources. The site design prioritizes substantial forested and native areas, fostering connectivity with nearby green spaces, promoting local ecosystems, and significantly reducing water demands for landscape maintenance, reflecting our strong commitment to eco-diplomacy and sustainability.

In parallel, 's ongoing embassy and consulate construction projects in the region are making progress towards achieving a minimum LEED Silver or Gold certification across the board. Multiple completed projects have already attained LEED Gold status, underscoring our dedication to sustainability and environmental excellence.
