Mikva Challenge DC Mikva Challenge DC provides opportunities for young people to engage in action civics and community problem solving, and seeks to increase youth voice
(1)

Mikva Challenge DC is local chapter of Mikva Challenge, a nonpartisan 501(c)3 organization that prioritizes the development of civic leadership in underserved DC high school youth. Mikva Challenge was founded in 1997 in Chicago as a tribute to former White House Counsel, Judge and U.S. Congressman Abner Mikva and his wife Zoe, a lifelong education activist. After years of successful operation in Chicago, local students and teachers organized to bring Mikva Challenge's unique action civic programming to DC. Mikva Challenge DC was was established as an official chapter in 2015. We help low-income DC youth become meaningful actors in politics and, by doing so, we honor the Mikvas’ decades of inspiring young adults to embark on careers in public service and politics. Through the Mikva process, young people connect with peers, adults and political issues, strategize about how to win their issue or campaign and take action to become real political participants. These youth tell us that they feel they have a “voice” now and report having a greater desire to vote, campaign, organize, lobby, and even run for office. Perhaps most importantly, these Mikva youth now believe that DC is their city and that they have the power, knowledge and skills to make it a more just and equitable place – both now and in the future.

Mission: Mikva Challenge develops youth to be informed, empowered, and active citizens and community leaders. We do this by engaging youth in action civics, an authentic and transformative learning process built on youth voice and youth expertise.

Let Youth Voters Take the Wheel

While doing a webinar about supporting youth voting with our DC Attorney General back in September, Mikva DC's ED met the wonderful Dr. Patricia Kapunan, MD, MPH, the Medical Director of Adolescent Health Center Children's National Hospital. She was excited to learn about the ways they include youth voter engagement in their comprehensive health services, that we decided to write an op-ed piece together about all the ways we could be supporting youth in being engaged, informed and active civic leaders!

Abner Mikva was a tireless advocate for democracy and ethical government and believed fervently in the power of young people to effect change. A timely film Mikva! Democracy is a Verb—airing nationally on PBS beginning in late October—chronicles his remarkable career as a US Congressman, Federal Judge, and White House Counsel.

Join us for a prescreening and lively conversation about the film hosted by Women's National Democratic Club.

‘Just Above Water’: As Hallowed D.C. Summer Youth Employment Program Preps to Go Virtual for First Time, Employers Rush to Create Meaningful Experience for 10,000 Students

Marje Hines spent last year’s D.C. summer youth employment program working as a summer camp counselor. She’d read books with rambunctious youngsters or take them outside to doodle with chalk and play basketball. Hines, 19, is working for that camp again this summer. But she won’t be seeing her...
