Before you finish packing the scrubs, … let’s talk paperwork!

If you’re prepping for your medical elective in Kenya, trust us—getting the admin sorted early makes stepping off the plane feel so much better.

Here are the big pre-departure essentials to tick off before you pack that carry-on:
- Get your Kenyan eTA sorted early – Don't leave it to the week of your flight. Give yourself at least a 2-week buffer to get it approved stress-free.
- Give your passport a quick check – You’ll need at least 6 months of validity left and at least one blank page.
- Keep your essentials handy – Save your elective placement confirmation, itinerary, and approved eTA right on your phone (and toss a printed copy in your bag just in case).
- Double-check before you fly – Entry guidelines can shift, so a quick final check before heading to the terminal never hurts!

Once the logistics are off your mind, you can focus on what you actually came to do: learning, scrubbing in, meeting incredible mentors, and taking in the beauty of Kenya.

Mid-morning, and the ward is quiet except for the shuffle of paper. Two students lean over a patient file, one pointing, one listening, piecing together a chart written in someone else's handwriting. No textbook quite prepares you for deciphering a doctor's handwriting, but there they are, figuring it out together, one word at a time.

This is what a normal day looks like for Elective Africa's pre-PA students in Kenya. Not lecture halls, but hospital rooms. Not hypothetical case studies, but real patients, real doctors, and real questions answered on the spot.

And somewhere between the rounds and the charts, something else happens. Students from opposite ends of the world start comparing notes. How healthcare looks back home. What's different here. What isn't. Different systems, different resources, the same curiosity pulling them all in the same direction. Every elective has a first doorway. This is one of ours.

Coast Provincial General Hospital doesn't perform for cameras. What you're looking at is simply a Tuesday morning — patients arriving, staff moving between wards, the quiet choreography of a hospital that has been serving the Coast region long before any of our students ever set foot here. Above the entrance, a mission statement outlines exactly what happens inside: curative, preventive, rehabilitative, and palliative care, delivered to an entire region and beyond. It's not written for marketing. It's written because it's true.

This is one of our real clinical partner sites — a working teaching and referral hospital, not a curated space built for visitors. The corridors our students walk are the same ones used by the doctors, nurses, and patients who rely on this hospital every single day. There is no separate, softened version of the experience. This is the elective.

We think that's worth showing plainly, without polish standing in for honesty.

A student messaged us last week with a simple question. What do I actually need before I go on my elective. She had her heart set on the placement, the dates were locked in, and suddenly the excitement gave way to a small wave of panic. Passport. Vaccinations. What to pack. What to expect. Where do I even start.

It's a question we hear often, so we decided to answer it properly. Swipe through and you'll find everything she needed to know, laid out simply. The paperwork that has to be sorted before departure. The health prep that keeps students safe once they're on the ground. What actually belongs in the suitcase, from scrubs to sunscreen, and to the small things people forget until day one. Not forgetting the mindset shift that, more than anything else, shapes how the whole experience unfolds.

Here's a moment we still think about fondly 🤍

Every group of Elective Africa students, before they pack their bags and head home, takes part in one of our favorite traditions: a donation drive for the hospital or community that welcomed them. It's become such a core part of the elective experience, with students pooling together resources, sourcing equipment, and making sure something tangible is left behind for the people who hosted them.

This particular handover was one for the books. Watching our elective students stand alongside the doctors, nurses, and support staff they'd spent weeks learning from, presenting IV stands and much-needed medical supplies makes you literally feel the warmth in the room. There was so much genuine joy circulating that day, with staff beaming, students grinning ear to ear, everyone crowding in for one big photo because nobody wanted the moment to end.

It's memories like this that remind us why we do what we do. Our electives are never just about clinical hours or ticking boxes for medical school. They're about relationships, gratitude, and small acts that ripple outward. The hospital or community gained a bit more support that day, but honestly, we think our students walked away with something even bigger.

To every doctor, nurse, and staff member who opens their doors to our students, thank you for making Elective Africa what it is.

Some goodbyes are never easy. ❤️

Last week, we watched our final Princeton student leave the shores of Mombasa, bringing an unforgettable two month elective to a close.

For eight weeks, Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital became more than just a placement site. It became a place of learning, growth, and transformation.

From early morning ward rounds to departmental teachings, clinical discussions, theatre observations, outpatient clinics, global health tutorials and patient interactions, each day presented a new opportunity to learn, deepening their clinical knowledge while gaining a greater appreciation for patient centered care in a different healthcare setting, far away from home.

They witnessed complex medical cases, observed procedures, engaged in case discussions, asked thoughtful questions, and learned directly from experienced healthcare professionals who generously shared their expertise. Every interaction added another layer to their understanding of medicine and strengthened the confidence they will carry into their future careers.

But perhaps the greatest lessons were the ones that could never be written in a textbook. The kindness of patients, the resilience of healthcare teams, the friendships formed, the warmth of the Kenyan Coast, and the moments shared beyond the hospital walls all became part of an experience that will stay with them long after they returned home.

As the final member of the Princeton cohort said goodbye to Kenya last week, they left with far more than clinical exposure. They carried home invaluable lessons, lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and a renewed sense of purpose in the path they have chosen.

To our Princeton students, and , thank you for trusting Elective Africa with your journey. It has been an honor to watch you grow, and we hope a part of Mombasa will always remain with you, just as each of you has left a lasting mark on ours.

When the elective ends, the certificate doesn't. 🎓

You'll fly home with photos, a few stories, and probably a case you'll never forget. But you'll also fly home with certified paperwork, and that turns out to be the part you need most later.

Every student who finishes a placement with us leaves with a certificate of completion, a logbook signed by the clinician who supervised them, and a proper record of the hours and departments they worked in.

It doesn't feel important in week one. It feels very important two years later, when you're writing a residency application and trying to remember what you actually did, how many weeks, and in which unit. You won't be guessing. It'll all be written down, signed, and sitting in your file.

Best part? You'll have a consultant who watched you work and can say something real about you.

For the past two months, Sheryl, an education student from Princeton University, has been undertaking her pre-education internship at Angels Junior Academy in Mombasa.

As her placement comes to an end, she reflects on her passion for teaching and working with children, and the opportunity to gain hands-on classroom experience while leading her own classroom for the first time.
