Over the weekend, our participants had the privilege of spending time at the Baby Life Rescue Centre in Mombasa, sharing moments of joy, laughter, and play with the children at the centre.

You are standing at the entrance of a ward for the first time. No script. No manual. Just you, watching the way the senior nurse moves, the way the consultant pauses before speaking, the way respect is given before anything clinical happens.

What does safety actually look like on a clinical placement in Kenya?
It looks like this.
Infection control notices on every wall. Department guidelines followed without exception. Emergency procedures that every student knows before they set foot on the ward. A consultant briefing before every single round.
We ensure our students are never in an environment that cuts corners. The infrastructure is real, the protocols are enforced, and the standard never drops, because in a hospital, it can't.

Most people assume a global elective is mostly observation. It isn't.

Not observing from a distance. Actually in it.
A global elective means real ward rounds, real cases, and consultants who expect real answers. You're embedded in a working hospital — taking histories, presenting cases, and encountering conditions most graduates won't see for years.
It's not a CV box-tick. It's one of the most challenging things you'll do as a medical student.
