A park and garden for and by the neighborhood. We are really excited to share Wangari Gardens with you! This 2.7 acre garden park in Washington, DC is bursting with creative potential.
With a mission inspired by a passion for community engagement and Professor Wangari Maathai’s legacy, we are building a park to benefit everyone. We’ve started with a community garden, youth garden, public fruit tree orchard, public vegetable garden, public herb garden, public berry garden, outdoor classroom, and pollinator hive. Drop by to grab a snack from the shared public garden spaces, or reserve a private plot! Soon, we hope to start working on a community compost drop off center, youth farmer’s market, walking/wheelchair trail, butterfly/sensory garden, public medicinal garden, natural playground and recreational space. Contact us at [email protected] or 202-670-5459 for more information! Friends of Wangari Gardens, Inc: "bringing creativity to unused land and enriching, sustaining, transforming, and cultivating it for the benefit of the surrounding community" INSPIRATION: Professor and Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai was the incredible founder of the Green Belt Movement, based in Kenya. She was an environmentalist and social justice peace activist who empowered mainly women in East Africa to plant more than 47 million trees. She tirelessly worked to combine environmental, economic, and social development. Professor Maathai passed away in September of 2011. COME GARDEN: Plant in a garden plot! If you live nearby, send us an e-mail ([email protected]) to get a copy of the bylaws and an application. VOLUNTEER WITH US: There are lots of different ways to volunteer your time and skills. -work days: bed construction, tree plantings, garden layout, etc. -maintenance: caring for the gardens, irrigation, mowing -fundraising: planning events, looking for donors, grant research, etc. -education: assisting new gardeners, teaching kids programs, etc. -cooking: providing healthy snacks for volunteers on workdays -outreach: helping to involve the surrounding neighborhoods in the creation of the park -stay in touch: sign up for our e-mail list ([email protected]) to get regular updates DONATE: Please visit our website (http://wangarigardens.wordpress.com/) to make a donation! Donations of gardening supplies and landscaping tools are also needed.

Set the Vision for Wangari Gardens - Part 2
Hi gardeners: as we push ahead with our plans to enhance the garden, we’re hoping you can help us spread the word. We’re gathering feedback about what new features would best serve
our community. (Vote for your favorite design here: bit.ly/wangari20 )
We want to use upcoming Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANC) meetings to point people to the survey and ask for their future support with one of our big challenges: water supply. Renting a meter from the city to hook up to the hydrant across the street is becoming increasingly costly, and the city is trying to discourage gardens from relying on hydrants.
Online ANC meetings include a time for two-minute community comments. We’d like to represent Wangari at as many of these meetings as possible while the survey is open (through
October 31).
Will you help by speaking at your next local meeting? (Don’t worry, we have a little script so you won’t have to give a speech on the fly!)
1. Use this map: https://dcgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/InformationLookup/index.html?appid=8b54d6b6dc1041f3a4c5de125d7c9580 to find the ward and sub-ward you belong to
2. Use this sheet: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jMrKGTSEIofxHoBhEBLc_BjSG1pkLdN0klaUuwkN8Ec/edit to sign up for the upcoming meeting.
3. During the comment period, share from the provided script.
Thank you so much for your help!

Wangari Giving Circle organized by Rachel Stone
Our CSA has been a smashing success and with support from our neighbors, we've been able to raise over $1000 to purchase boxes for those in need, so far. Due to the ongoing pandemic, life is still not back to normal and, as such, we've decided to set up a GoFundMe to raise additional funds on a more ongoing basis. Any donation amount is welcome and much appreciated. Thank you so much to those who have already donated! 🙂
