It is a dynamic, progressive union that provides workers a voice at work. The Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO (UWUA) is one of the most successful and progressive unions in all of the labor movement. We have around 45,000 members working in the electric, gas, water, renewable and nuclear industries across the United States. Our influence is not just felt by our numbers; it is recognized

that the UWUA is both innovative and relentless in our interest in and ability to protect utility jobs, and the wages, benefits and working conditions that our members enjoy in their jobs. We are committed to a job well done and dedicated to improving the lives of our UWUA members and their families, indeed, all working families. The UWUA knows that our strength lies with our membership, so every decision we make, every negotiation we take part in, and every initiative we put in place is done with the advancement and well being of thousands of UWUA members, retirees and their families in mind. We have invested a great deal of time and money in a variety of programs, such as safety and health training, legislative affairs, and benefits plans, so that our members will be protected on the job and in their paychecks. We are extremely proud of the great advancements the UWUA has made and very excited about what will surely be a bright and prosperous future.

⚖️ On This Day in Labor History – June 12, 1945
On this day in 1945, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down two sections of a Florida law that targeted union business agents and required unions to register all officers with the state. These laws aimed to undermine the power of unions by controlling their leadership and limiting their ability to organize.
The court’s decision was a major victory for workers’ rights, affirming that unions must remain free from government interference to effectively represent working families. This ruling helped protect the right of union representatives to advocate for fair wages, safer working conditions, and better benefits.
At UWUA, we carry forward this legacy by standing strong in defense of our members' rights to organize, bargain collectively, and have a voice in the workplace.
Together, we continue the fight for justice, fairness, and dignity on the job.

Political engagement means power! Representatives from the UWUA recently attended a fundraiser with CA State Senator Maria Elena Durazo with special guest Delores Huerta. Local 132 President Bill Gilbertson and Trustee Andrew Roble also recently attended the 2025 CA Democratic Party Convention. The two met with candidates for CA governor, lieutenant governor, and senator and discussed various issues facing our union, including our opposition to SB 254.

📅 This Day in History – June 10, 1963
💼 Equal Pay for Equal Work

On this day, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act, a landmark law mandating that women receive equal pay for performing the same jobs as men. This legislation was a major step toward closing the gender wage gap and advancing fairness in the American workplace.

At the UWUA, we continue to stand behind the fight for pay equity and ensure that all workers—regardless of gender—are treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.

Equal work deserves equal pay. Always.

Today, we honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day in the fight against fascism. Their courage laid the foundation for the freedoms we defend every day. The UWUA stands in solemn remembrance and gratitude. 🇺🇸

🗓️ On this day in labor history: 1947
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Taft-Hartley Act, a turning point in American labor relations. This legislation gave the president power to intervene in labor disputes—and imposed major restrictions on unions.
President Truman vetoed the bill, calling it a “dangerous intrusion on free speech and free assembly.”
But Congress overrode his veto. The law was passed, weakening the power of unions and shifting the balance in favor of employers.
📚 Why it still matters:
The Taft-Hartley Act banned key union tools like closed shops, limited political activity, and allowed states to pass harmful “Right-to-Work” laws. Its legacy still affects workers today.
At UWUA, we know our history—because it shapes our fight for dignity, safety, and a voice on the job.
🛠️ An injury to one is an injury to all.
📢 Stay informed. Stay organized. Stay strong.
