It is a dynamic, progressive union that provides workers a voice at work. The Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO (UWUA) is one of the most successful and progressive unions in all of the labor movement. We have over 50,000 members working in the electric, gas, water, and nuclear industries across the United States. Our influence is not just felt by our numbers; it is recognized that the UWU

A is both innovative and relentless in our interest in and ability to protect utility jobs, and the wages, benefits and working conditions that our members enjoy in their jobs. We are committed to a job well done and dedicated to improving the lives of our UWUA members and their families, indeed, all working families. The UWUA knows that our strength lies with our membership, so every decision we make, every negotiation we take part in, and every initiative we put in place is done with the advancement and well being of thousands of UWUA members, retirees and their families in mind. We have invested a great deal of time and money in a variety of programs, such as safety and health training, legislative affairs, and benefits plans, so that our members will be protected on the job and in their paychecks. We are extremely proud of the great advancements the UWUA has made over the past 65 years and very excited about what will surely be a bright and prosperous future.

💡 ⚡ 💪 "In a culture where college is often the first — or even the only — choice presented to high school students, we’re offering another path for the ones who may be better suited for a career in the trades." Moses Rams, President of UWUA Local 470-1, explains how his local is training the next generation of front-line utility workers with an innovative hands-on paid internship program.

🎣On July 27, 103 youth anglers caught largemouth bass and hybrid bluegill with the guidance of volunteers from UWUA and other unions as part of the Union Sportsmen's Alliance Take Kids Fishing Day in Dayton, Ohio.

Each youth in attendance took home a free fishing rod and reel, and for many of the participants it was their first introduction to fishing. What an impactful community service event!

9/11 first responders, including many utility workers, selflessly put themselves in harm's way in order to search, rescue and rebuild after the most devastating terrorist attack in our nation’s history. These heroes deserve our lifelong support and gratitude. Now it is our turn to take action.

The World Trade Center Health Program, which provides healthcare for 9/11 responders and survivors who are injured and ill from the toxins at Ground Zero, is facing an impending budget shortfall. This funding deficit could lead to cuts starting in 2028; just as we expect more people to need the program’s care due to increasing 9/11 cancers.

Take a moment to urge your Senators and Member of Congress to support 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act of 2024:

Why you should know if your Member of Congress co-sponsored the 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act of 2024 (S. 4724/H.R. 9101) In the coming years there will be a growing funding shortfall facing the World Trade Center Health Program. Unless Congress acts, starting in 2028 the...

After several years of organizing, about 6,300 staffers at the University of Pittsburgh will soon have the opportunity to form their union with United Steelworkers.

UWUA members Joe Ferguson of UWUA LOCAL 349 and J.J. Popio of Gas Workers Union UWUA Local G-555 demonstrated by reaching out to eligible Pitt staff bargaining unit members to let them know to look for their union ballots in the mail starting on August 15.

When the Pitt Staff Union wins their election it will be a victory for the entire labor movement!

Last week, members of the UWUA Women's Caucus took part in the leadership class at the 47th United Association for Labor Education (UALE) Women’s Summer School UMASS. A woman’s place is in our union!

Darlene Arcese and LaTrease Williams were elected by fellow union sisters to be on the Student Council. They were responsible for addressing issues and concerns such as accommodations, meals, climate control, health and safety, transportation, etc.

Darlene and Valerie King participated in a multi-media show by Bev Grant, depicting women activists in the labor movement. Darlene portrayed Olga Madar, and Valorie was Sojourner Truth.

UWUA members participated in workshops including: Leadership Skills; Mobilizing for Direct Action; Organizing Never Stops: Effective Strategies for Building Power; and Building Power through Bargaining.

Sending to our fellow UWUA members in Northern California impacted by the Park Fire. Over the past three weeks more that 428,808 acres have burned, making it the 4th largest fire in CA history.

We are relieved to report that so far no members have lost their homes and that none have been injured. However, utility workers and community members living in the wide evacuation zones in and around Chico, CA, were ordered to leave on short notice. Some had as little as four hours of notice, while others had about a day to evacuate.

Utility workers from six different UWUA Locals mobilized quickly to respond to the emergency, traveling to help from as far away as the Bay Area, Central Valley, Bakersfield and Monterey. Operators have been working long hours to make system changes to support the needs of firefighters.

UWUA members report feeling lucky that utility service areas weren’t more impacted as they continue to work to support the towns on the edge of the fire.

Last week, the AFL-CIO released its annual Executive Paywatch report. CEOs of S&P 500 companies made $17.7 million on average in 2023, more than 268 times their median worker’s income.

This is why working people must band together in unions to fight inequality! Read more details at: https://buff.ly/3IOID0d

Shout out to several recently organized workplaces in Ohio that are currently bargaining their first contracts as part of our union!

Water, wastewater and street workers in both the city of Louisville and the city of Upper Sandusky are negotiating agreements as part of Gas Workers Union UWUA Local G-555

Workers at Carroll Electric Cooperative do jobs ranging from overhead lines to meters and are bargaining as part of UWUA LOCAL 116

Forming a union is the surest way for utility workers to have a say on the job and improve their wages, benefits and working conditions.

Congratulations to Sheik H. Rahaman of UWUA Local 1-2 recently retired after 35 years of service as a Distribution Splicer and Mentor in Bronx Services!

Even though his union siblings will miss him, we are happy whenever hard work is rewarded with a secure and dignified retirement. That is what our union is all about!

"UWUA Local 601 is proud to endorse Sue Altman for Congress in New Jersey district 7. She came to our Executive Council Meeting on June 27th and the vote was unanimous. She showed us that she has the backs of our union and our working families. She promised to keep her door open for the Utility Workers Union of America and listen to all our concerns. Her opponent has zero interest in hearing our voices and the door has been locked shut. We encourage all our members, families and friends to get out on November 5th and vote for who is best for working families. Sue Altman for Congress." - Noel J. Christmas, President of UWUA 601

The tragic loss of Trey Michael Gray serves as a poignant reminder that the fight for worker safety is far from over. Labor unions play an essential role in this ongoing battle, advocating tirelessly for the health and well-being of workers across all industries. Our efforts are vital in ensuring that the promises of the Occupational Safety and Health Act are fulfilled and that every worker can expect to return home safely at the end of the day.

07/31/2024

Aaron Miller of UWUA Local 150 has worked at Palisades nuclear plant, which provides power to 800,000 homes, for almost 30 years.

“I monitor and operate the reactor and the support systems as well as the turbine generating part of the plant. We watch the reactor and make adjustments. There’s a lot of machinery that goes into that and we watch and operate all of that,” says Miller. “We’re watching temperature parameters, pressure parameters and we make adjustments based on those readings and trends. We test a lot of equipment, specifically emergency equipment and make sure it’s working within specification.”

Miller’s job is one of about 140 that would be saved if the plant stays open. He is looking forward to the implementation of the next generation of nuclear power technologies, which will be simpler, safer and more reliable. Miller advocates for an “all of the above” approach to meeting our country’s energy needs while cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

“We don’t want our grid to be all one thing. It doesn’t work that way. You don’t want all of your eggs in one basket,” says Miller.
