We share a common goal with every organization and individual who cares about wild horses and burros: keeping these animals safe and out of harm’s way. The BLM strengthens its adoption and sale requirements regularly, but no system is perfect. When someone violates federal law or misuses the program, we take that seriously, and we rely on the public to help us stop it.
If advocates , or anyone else, has credible information that a buyer may be violating the terms of sale or putting animals at risk, we ask that they report it right away rather than holding it for future stories or social media content. Timely reporting allows law enforcement to intervene before an animal is harmed and before a violation grows into a larger pattern of abuse. When these cases are reported, we bring the full force of our law enforcement partners to investigate and, when warranted, refer them to the Department of Justice for prosecution.
We recognize that speaking up quickly may feel complicated, especially for groups whose work relies on public communication and fundraising. But protecting the horses is the priority we all share, and early reporting is one of the most direct ways to prevent bad actors from exploiting the program or funneling animals into illegal channels.
