1846 - The territory of the District of Columbia southwest of the Potomac River was returned to Virginia through an Act of Congress.
1853 - Commodore Matthew Perry and four US Navy vessels visited Japan to force them to open up to American trade and end their policy of isolation.
1877 - The First Wimbledon tennis championship took place.
1893 - Surgeon Daniel Hale Williams performed the first successful open-heart surgery.
1918 – An inbound local train collided with an outbound express in Nashville, Tennessee, creating the deadliest rail accident in United States history.
1922 – Johnny Weissmuller swam the 100 meters freestyle in 58.6 seconds, breaking the world swimming record and the coveted ‘minute barrier.’ His swimming prowess would later translate into Hollywood fame as the iconic movie Tarzan.
1926 – Chiang Kai-shek accepted the crucial post of commander-in-chief of the National Revolutionary Army setting in
motion a campaign that would reshape modern Chinese history.
1932 - One of the oldest National Football League franchises was founded as the Boston Braves. In 1936, the franchise changed its name to the R**skins and moved to Washington, D.C. in 1937. The team’s name and logo were viewed as controversial by some for decades before it was retired in 2020 as part of a wave of name changes during a period of racial unrest in the United States. The
team played as the Washington Football Team for two years before rebranding as the Commanders in 2022.
1943 – World War II entered a decisive phase as the Allied invasion of Sicily commenced. The operation led directly to Mussolini’s downfall and forced Hi**er to break off the Battle of Kursk.
1944 – American forces successfully captured Saipan, bringing the Japanese archipelago within range of devastating B-29 raids and causing the immediate downfall of the Tojo government.
1961 – Greece became the first member state to join the European Economic Community by signing the historic Athens Agreement.
1986 – The New Zealand Parliament passed the groundbreaking Homosexual Law Reform Act, legalizing homosexuality throughout the country.
1993 – The Parliament of Canada passed the transformative Nunavut Act, leading to the 1999 creation of Nunavut territory. This legislation divided the Northwest Territories into arctic Inuit and sub-arctic Dene lands based on a democratic plebiscite.
