NAPABA celebrates the issuance of The Honorable Patsy Takemoto Mink Quarter, which commemorates the life and achievements of the trailblazing lawyer, and first woman of color and first AANHPI woman to serve in Congress. The quarter features Congresswoman Mink, wearing a lei representing Hawaii, and holding a copy of her signature Title IX legislation. NAPABA is thrilled that the U.S. Mint continues to honor the contributions and legacies of strong AANHPI women. Previously, the Mint issued quarters featuring actress Anna May Wong and native Hawaiian composer and performance artist Edith Kanakaʻole.

NAPABA recently spotlighted the enduring promise of Congresswoman Mink's landmark Title IX at our Convention in Indianapolis, where we featured athletes and legal experts who discussed how her legislation continues to govern and shape the legal landscape on gender equality, athletics, and education.

The 2024 Patsy Takemoto Mink Quarter is the 12th coin in the American Women Quarters™ Program.

Today is the anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed on February 19, 1942. It led to the forced removal and incarceration of 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry.

As the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) aptly recognizes, "[e]very February, the Japanese American community commemorates Executive Order 9066 as a reminder of the impact the incarceration experience has had on our families, our community, and our country. It is an opportunity to educate others on the fragility of civil liberties in times of crisis, and the importance of remaining vigilant in protecting the rights and freedoms of all."

In the ongoing litigation against Florida’s discriminatory alien land law (“SB 264”), the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit granted a preliminary injunction yesterday in favor of two of the plaintiffs and halted enforcement of the law against them. In temporarily blocking SB 264, the court held that the plaintiffs demonstrated a substantial likelihood that the statute is preempted by federal law and that they have showed an imminent risk that the law would cause them irreparable harm. The plaintiffs, lawfully present Chinese immigrants, first brought the suit because they were stymied in their efforts to purchase homes when the law went into effect. Tomorrow, the American Bar Association’s Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession will award the recipients of their 2024 Spirit of Excellence Award. NAPABA is honored that two members of our bar, Hon. Dolly Gee and Hon. Benes Aldana (ret.), have been selected for this distinctive award.

As a bar leader, Judge Gee broke down barriers and promoted the full and equal participation of so many in the legal profession. Today, as a judge, her fierce independence and fidelity to the rule of law have made her a beacon of judicial integrity.

Alongside Judge Gee, Judge Aldana has a remarkable record of service to his country, to his community, and to the legal profession. His national reputation as a pioneer and catalyst for judicial education is well-deserved.

NAPABA is delighted to celebrate our two, trailblazing members and their fellow honorees Col. José A. Cora, Judge Sarah E. Hill, and Juan R. Thomas. To read more about this year’s honorees: http://bit.ly/3UlJltv

The right to reproductive healthcare depends on meaningful access to safe and effective medications. NAPABA joined hundreds of coalition partners in an amicus brief supporting the availability of mifepristone, an FDA-approved safe and effective medication that millions across the country, including AANHPIs and other communities of color, have used for over 20 years to address their reproductive healthcare needs. When it comes to fundamental rights, we refuse to turn back the clock. Read our amicus brief: https://buff.ly/3w8RO9e
