- A look back to our time with residents of the HOPE Cooperative. LISC has stood along side the Tenants Association's for over 10 years, as they secured ownership of their 13 unit building located in the neighborhood in , planting roots for years to come. This project is an example of the work necessary to create thriving neighborhoods and avoid displacement across the region. Our work is not quick, but the results are precious and we can't wait to celebrate the work accomplished over the years at our 40th Anniversary Celebration.

Can Anacostia Build a Bridge Without Displacing Its People?

Anacostia is a community rich in culture with a deep history. For the last 30 years LISC DC has worked alongside partners and community leaders within the region to empower the leaders to co-create pathways of opportunities for more commerce and prosperity in neighborhoods where families can live and thrive for years to come.

The residents of Anacostia have always known what they needed in their community - they simply needed access to more resources. In 2015, the Equitable Development plan was formed and LISC pledged $50M to ensure the communities surrounding the DC Bridge Park could stay and reap the benefits of an incoming flux of businesses and development that would come as a result of the DC Bridge Park.

The New York Times article highlights the amazing work done in the last 7 years. Since the implementation of the Equitable Development Plan, LISC has surpassed it’s $50M goal - $70M has been invested into affordable homes and businesses in the region, and as the Bridge Park begins to take shape, we look back on the past few years with immense gratitude for the partnerships we’ve formed and communities we’ve seen flourish and we look forward with immense excitement for the years to come.

A decade in the works, the 11th Street Bridge Park in Washington, D.C., has yet to be built. But it could be a model for how to create public space while lessening the effects of gentrification.

As plans for transit-oriented development unfold around Capitol Heights, Prince George’s looks to keep housing affordable

Over the last year, thanks to the support of Kaiser Permanente, LISC has been engaging with residents, community groups, and county and philanthropic leaders to imagine what inclusive economic development in Prince George's County Blue Line Corridor could look like. We're excited to announce our first investment in the corridor: A $2.8 million acquisition and predevelopment loan for the creation of 158 homes at 210 on the Park. The 3-acre vacant lot will be transformed into 158 mixed income homes, with ground floor retail for Prince George’s County residents.

The neighborhood around Capitol Heights Metro has the potential to be a vibrant, thriving mixed-use community, with shops and residences, buzzing with pedestrian, bike, and scooter traffic for all; however, Prince George’s officials also need to adopt policies to keep long-time residents in place.

Reeling off of the long weekend, we take a moment to reflect and honor - a pivotal moment in our nation's history.

It's been 157 years since the complete emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.

We celebrate the progress that has been made, and honor the sacrifices and history as the fight for equity and justice continues in our nation and a motivating factor for why we do what we do.

The past few weeks have been tragic for our nation. From the mass shooting in Buffalo to the school shooting in Uvalde (to the near miss in DC) - our country has witnessed torrents of violence that, unfortunately, feel all too familiar.

Memorial Day is meant to honor those who died fighting for our country. Those who fought to protect our American way of life.

As we enter the long weekend, we need to honor that sacrifice and ask, again how our American way of life needs tending and what needs to change. Each act of violence, whether in mass shootings or individual outbursts that never get lasting attention, that violence fuels anguish, sadness, and anger. But, not despair. We need to confront this epidemic of violence with the same determination and purpose of demonstrated by those whose sacrifice we remember on Memorial Day.

The balcony atop Victory Housing’s Spring Flats property gives the seniors who live there a sweeping, spectacular vista of the District. The 88 affordable apartments for seniors were snapped up in 5 weeks, testifying to the determination of older Washingtonians to remain in Washington as it turns back decades of disinvestment.

LISC invested $100,000 in this project years ago, as Victory Housing’s vision was joined with Bank of America CDC and Brinshore Development to make the project happen. With strong determination from the neighborhood, the project not only restored the historic Hebrew Home that had been vacant for 14 years, but they added a total of 149 affordable units, 185 in total, and 8 new homeownership properties.

Spring Flats is transit accessible to the Petworth metro and neighborhood, which bustles every day with residents and students, and is next door to a community center and a new elementary school is rising as well. With intention and resources, Spring Flats stands as an example that development need not lead to displacement.

Will affordable housing needs overcome some neighbors’ opposition to Dance Loft on 14?

In 2021 with the help of LISC, the community-based arts organization Dance Loft on 14 partnered with Heleos to purchase their building and avoid displacement from their 16th Street Heights neighborhood. Their vision is the complete redevelopment of their space into an environmentally sustainable mixed income affordable housing and community arts space, all in a neighborhood that has a great need for and increased commercial corridor activity.

LISC is proud to support this equitable and community-driven project that provides a permanent location for Dance Loft on 14, delivers 66 affordable homes -- many of which are family-sized -- and will support a more vibrant, engaged commercial node on upper 14th Street NW.

How redevelopment is winding its way through historic Anacostia - Washington Business Journal

After decades of disinvestment, 's & the surrounding neighborhoods are seeing record numbers of new development from to office & retail space. Ensuring this effort is led in part by Black developers and also ensuring community voices continue to be at the center is crucial for equitable development.
