The Friendship Fire Association is currently in the process of having our 1905 American LaFrance Steamer Engine, which served as Engine 18 in the district, cosmetically preserved. In order to complete this project, we have kicked off a major fundraising campaign. The goal is to have the Steamer completed and returned to DC where it will be pulled by horses on or about June 15, 2025 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary Last Run of The Horses which occurred on June 15, 1925. The steamer is also significant because it is the last horse drawn apparatus the Department used in regular service. It should be noted that this idea was from Past President & Retired DCFEMS Lt. James Embry, who passed away in January of 2022. We are moving on with this project in his honor. Please consider a donation to this historical project. Friendship Fire Association is proud to have assisted Metro Richmond Flying Squad from the very start and will continue to support this great organization as needed. We are excited to see the progress of them over the last 6 years!
6 years ago this weekend the “idea” was born to create an all volunteer rehabilitative team to support our Metro Richmond firefighters.
All we had at that time was an idea , a vision and a donated response vehicle.
The initial operational goal was to provide support to the City of Richmond covering 75 square miles with a longer term goal to support Metro Richmond.
Items required for this idea to become reality were:
Approval from Richmond FD
Start up funding
Members
Operating rules
Equipment purchases
An organization name
With a proposed all volunteer organization supporting career departments the first dialogue was with IAFF Local 995 President Keith Andes. We wanted to make sure we were not infringing on labor issues.
With swift approval from local 995 our next step was find some initial funding.
We approached then President of the Richmond Fire Department Foundation, David Loving to discuss some start up funding.
With the initial funding approved , we then needed approval from Richmond Fire Department. Interim Fire Chief I. David Daniels gave us our approval to proceed and the only question was “when can you be operational?”
Our answer was May of 2017
We then had 4 months to get to work identifying equipment , making purchases , recruiting members , training etc.
Our initial membership consisted of around 20 members.
We went operational on time and under budget on April 30 th , 2017 at 17:00 hours.
Since that time our organization has doubled its membership to 40 members , secured our own headquarters , have MOU agreements with the Counties of Goochland , Henrico , Hanover.
We added 3 additional response apoatatus , implemented the quick response “Car 17 concept” and became our own 501 c 3
We currently cover a 1074 square mile area and will surpass 300 runs and 76 scheduled events this year a new record.
Thanks to everyone who has helped us along the way and we look forward to the coming years of providing professional support to the agencies we serve.
