Chase Edwards (former Key student) is organizing a fundraiser to support the Haese Academy, a non-profit organization that lifts Dominican youth out of poverty through education and athletic training. Please see below from Chase.

Susan Haese and her husband Derek are the founders of the Haese Academy. Mrs Haese was my first grade teacher at Key Elementary School. I had the honour of being able to go to the Dominican Republic recently to visit her, and see the school and academy. I even had the chance to teach the students Chinese!

When I was down there, I noticed a lack of school supplies, things I take for granted having here in DC. So, my mom and I have created a 'Build-A-Backpack' fundraiser to provide the necessary materials for the students and the classrooms. By providing backpacks filled with basic school supplies, we can make a change and impact on the students who go to the Haese Academy .

We are hoping to build a complete backpack for each of the students. Each backpack costs $50 to fill (and ship). Once we have covered the costs of the backpacks, any additional contributions will go towards books, dictionaries, calculators, and maybe even laptops if we are lucky!

Thank you for considering contributing a backpack. I hope you can help support Susan and Derek's amazing efforts.

Please use the link below to donate, and thank you! https://gofund.me/7f9571a1

Key School has been selected as a 2021 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School!!

As a member of the DC Environmental Literacy Leadership Cadre, Key’s beloved Science Teacher Amy Johnson, was the driving force behind integrating environmental education across all curriculum areas and establishing the school’s environmental literacy program. Her ability to align core curriculum with environmental stewardship exponentially increased engagement among Key School students, staff, parents, and community members. As she stated in the Key School Garden Year End Report in 2017, “We strive to develop caring individuals who recognize that their actions have a direct impact on their environment, other people and themselves. We have been able to allow all of our students to become understanding of their role in their environment and identify ways they can lead a responsible life.” Way to go Key! @EDGreenRibbonSchools #EDGreenRibbonSchools

Today we presented the banner thanking our healthcare workers and $500 to Sibley Hospital. The banner was donated to the PCA by Julie & Jack Koczela (standing behind the banner) and signed by many of you at the farmers market.

Cecile Anderson, Livia Rochette & Lia Stern (standing in front of the banner, from left to right) sold cookies & cupcakes to raise money for our healthcare workers.

Thank you to everyone!

Palisades Community Association

You are invited to the PCA sponsored Winter Bake Sale on Saturday, December 12th, noon to 4pm. This event will be an entirely outdoors, well-organized, socially distant bake sale on the grounds of The Hub (at the Palisades Community Church) with an entrance and exit path similar to the Farmer’s Market.

All proceeds will go to supporting The Hub, the newly formed neighborhood resource and gathering center for the future. We believe it is possible to do this safely, but respectfully ask our community to come knowing that guidelines will be required and, as much as we miss each other, this is not a gathering. Masks will be required to enter the area.

Saturday, December 12th 12 noon-4pm
The Hub
5200 Cathedral Ave NW

We hope you will stop by to buy cookies, breads, cakes, pies, and more. Pick up a sweet for one or an entire cake for the family.

CALLING ALL BAKERS!

To make the Palisades Bake Sale successful we need baked goods- cookies, cupcakes, quick breads, pies, and cakes! Please consider contributing to this neighborhood event.

Please drop off individually wrapped goods at one of these locations on Friday, December 11th anytime, or Saturday, December 12th from 9am-11am. If it is not possible to individually package items ready for sale, email [email protected] and we could make arrangements to help with packaging. Don’t let packaging stop you from making and donating cookies or cupcakes. Please indicate if any items are nut free, dairy free, or gluten free.

It’s puzzle time!!!

Bring a puzzle and go home with a new project to keep you entertained during the long winter nights. Kids puzzles and adult puzzles welcome. If you have puzzles to spare and can’t make the swap – please drop them at Maria Garcia’s house at 2339 King Place. Puzzles with a couple missing pieces are ok too – include a post-it that indicates the number of pieces missing. If you have puzzles to donate but need a pick-up – please email Maria ([email protected]) or Abby Horrigan ([email protected]).

If you don’t have puzzles to swap, come by the Farmers Market on the 13th and make a donation to the Friends of the Palisades Library and take home a puzzle – while supplies last.

Sponsored by the Palisades Community Association and the Friends of the Palisades Library.

Our wonderful former Key first grade and Spanish teacher Susan Haese needs our help.

In August, Susan, her husband Derek (a former Division 1 baseball player), and their two young children Penelope and Cooper moved back to the Dominican Republic and the school they founded together in 2016 - The Haese Academy.

In the DR, 80% of children enrolled in first grade drop out before high school when boys and young men turn their focus to baseball - an extreme long shot way out of an otherwise guaranteed life of poverty. The Haese Academy seeks to interrupt this cycle by providing access to an education focused on bilingualism, athleticism, nutrition, and the dream of higher education. You can read more about their inspiring work here: https://www.haeseacademy.com/mission

Susan and Derek are making great gains building into the the community they love, but right now they need books. Bilingual books are preferred, but all are welcomed. You may purchase and donate brand new books through their Amazon Wishlist here https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3LU4Z4BTJYZ3P?ref_=wl_share. If ordering or mailing directly, please ship to:

Robert Fleishman
2714 Cathedral Ave NW

Hi Neighbors and Fellow Key Families,
Since the pandemic started, I've started sewing custom-fit cotton face masks that fit everyone from ages 2 and up. They are two layers of 100% cotton and feature a filter pocket, removable flexible metal nose bridge piece, and an extra pair of super comfy lightweight elastic. Right now, I'm offering a deep discount on my limited remaining Halloween mask stock - all masks in these prints are $10 each. All I need is a quick, simple face measurement, and I am happy to deliver masks in the neighborhood by tomorrow (Friday 10/30).
If you're looking for a mask to go with a Halloween costume, I'm happy to do rush jobs on all other prints at the regular $15 price in time for Saturday if not sooner. My print stash ranges from Minecraft to My Little Pony, so don't be afraid to ask! Contact [email protected] for more details and to place an order. @linden2crafts
