Georgetown University Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies

Georgetown University Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies Welcome to The Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies institutional home to one of the most distinguished programs at Georgetown University.

Although we teach four languages in the department, Arabic remains at the center of what we do. Indeed, the need for area-studies specialists with advanced proficiency in Arabic has never been greater or more compelling. As Americans struggle to build a better understanding of the Arab world, its society, its religion, and its culture, we have continued to develop a determined and vigorous long-term strategy to create and maintain linguistic and cultural expertise among our students. Arabic is the native language of over 200 million people in 20 different countries as well as the liturgical language for over a billion Muslims. It is a member of the Semitic language family and has a long and distinguished literary and intellectual tradition. It is now a key factor in understanding and negotiating crucial contemporary global issues. In accordance with Georgetown’s Jesuit ethos, we stress knowledge of Arabic as a path to living altruistically and creatively in a globally-integrated world. Follow us on Twitter @GUArabic

Congratulations, Dr. Colla!

Georgetown University Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies professor Elliott Colla’s book, Baghdad Central, was adapted to a TV mini-series. Wanted: Arabic Students for PAID Study!

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is interested in studying how learners of Arabic perceive speech sounds in Arabic. They hope this research will help instructors and students of Arabic understand what aspects of speech perception are most difficult for foreign language learners, which would help instructors and students of Arabic understand what aspects of speech perception are most difficult for foreign language learners, which could help improve instruction.

WHO: People who have completed at least one year of university-level Arabic courses. Participants must be native speakers of English at least 18 years of age, should not be native or heritage speakers of Arabic, and not have a known history of speech language pathology or hearing loss.

WHAT: You will be asked to attend 1 session lasting 1-3 hours. During the session, you will answer a language background questionnaire and transcribe a series of Arabic words and non-words that will be played for you.

You will be paid $25 upon completion of the questionnaire and transcription activity, with two chances to win a $50 iTunes gift card. One $50 gift card will be awarded to the most accurate speller and the other will go to a randomly selected participant.

WHERE: Testing will be conducted on campus. Please email Mona Madgavkar at [email protected] for information on testing times and places to sign up for the next session. Testing is ongoing, so please sign up as soon as possible. Space is limited!

Heads up, students on loans!

(Psst! We offer full tuition coverage plus a stipend for our PhD programs!)

College students are facing a roughly $20 billion increase in the cost of their federal loans, despite a much-heralded deal in Washington to contain the expense of higher education.

Looking for some additional Arabic practice this Summer? The Georgetown English as a Foreign Language department is looking for students who would like to exchange conversation, both in English and Arabic with native Arabic speakers for the summer semester!

The Language Exchange Program is an opportunity for our international students here studying English to get a chance to practice their conversational English (and not just academic English!). We recommend partners meet for at least an hour each week with (but meeting times and places are the responsibility of the participants, so they can meet as little or as much as they would like). We recommend that each language be practiced for half of the time. This is not intended for homework help, but rather for both participants to practice the language they’re learning with a native speaker.

These students are here for an 8-week session that ends July 13th and we are looking for participants!

If interested, please email your name, preferred email, phone number and age to Chelsea at: [email protected]
