August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of vaccines for people of all ages. Your DC VA Medical Center team encourages all Veterans to stay current on routine vaccines including, flu, pneumonia, shingles, and Tdap.

Be sure to review your personal vaccination records with your VA provider. You can request an appointment via MyHealtheVet or by calling 202-745-8577.

Please join your DC VA Medical Center team in congratulating Ms. Lucile A. Lisle, Recreation Therapist, for her recent AMVETS award, presented during the 20th Annual Awards Banquet hosted by the Department of the District of Columbia, recognizing her 20+ years of dedication and service to Veterans.

Ms. Lisle is honored to have had the opportunity to co-treat Veterans at DC VAMC and its Community Living Center alongside VA providers, therapists, neuropsychology fellows, and researchers as well as working to guide new therapists and presenting at conferences. Ms. Lisle has partnered to provide Veterans with physical, occupational, music, equine therapies, and more.

Ms. Lisle is grateful for her work and times where she worked alongside AMVETS, especially with Mr. Johnnie Collins, who is a valued partner and Veteran who continues to serve Veterans.

National Purple Heart Day:
Today, we join the nation in commemorating the creation of the oldest American military decoration which was commissioned in 1782 by General George Washington, Commander-In-Chief of the Continental Army, and presented for military merit.

The purple color represents the blood of all who have made sacrifices in war, traditionally representing the courage of those who serve. On National Purple Heart Day, we also remember and honor the bravery, sacrifice, and service of those wounded or killed in combat.

Reminder Notice: Temporary Access Restrictions at DC VAMC

At 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, access to Building 6 (Renal Care, Audiology and Dental Services) and surrounding parking lots will be restricted to ensure safe access and operations of an oversized crane lift in support of facility upgrades.

Veterans attending Saturday clinic and CLC visitors may park in the Patient and Visitor Parking Lot or Garage and use the medical center's main entrance during this weekend closure.

Access to Building 6 and surrounding parking areas will reopen at 5:00 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026.

The safety of Veterans, staff and visitors is our priority. The temporary closure supports facility upgrade projects and is scheduled at a low impact timeframe. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.

We have officially received The Gold Seal of Approval, a noted symbol of quality and safety in healthcare, from The Joint Commission!

The Gold Seal of Approval shows that your DC VA Medical Center team is holding itself accountable to delivering Veterans safe, quality care. You may recall that our unannounced triannual accreditation survey was held June 2-5, 2026, where eight surveyors conducted an in-depth review of our care delivery processes. Following direct observations, staff, and Veteran-patient interviews, The Joint Commission highlighted the DC VAMC team's ability to communicate and work together well, and noting specific departments for stellar care delivery practices.

DC VAMC Veterans bring home gold and silver medals following the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, July 9-14, 2026.

Four Maryland-area Veterans supported by DC VAMC Recreation Therapist Niketia Davis, had the opportunity to demonstrate their unstoppable character and to showcase their talents while competing in the Wheelchair Games held in Detroit, Michigan. Every participant is a winner --the training and preparation alone demands the crowds cheer.

Congratulations to our two Army Veteran medalists, Mr. David Bean (Gold & Silver) and Mr. Ambrose Doye (Silver) and welcome back, team DC VAMC!
