Since implementing HomewardDC in 2016 the @mayor_bowser Administration has driven down overall homelessness by 38% and family homelessness by 73%. The new 801 East Men’s Shelter builds on this progress and supports @MayorBowser's promise to reduce homelessness among single adults.

This week, the District began providing services here. Its unique design, built in partnership w/ service provider partners and clients with lived-experience of homelessness, offers resources tailored to accommodate the diverse needs of clients accessing homeless services.

This 356-bed facility includes: a low-barrier shelter, a day center, beds for men in the employment program, and beds for seniors and other medically vulnerable individuals.

Essential client services include: shower and laundry facilities, a computer lab, barbershop and hair salon, clothing boutique and full working kitchen.

The District is transforming its response to homelessness among single adults. The new 801 East Shelter is the first of many shelter redevelopment projects underway.

“Since launching Homeward DC, we have been on a mission to transform our homeless services system so that we can prevent a shelter experience for more people, so that we can provide safe and dignified shelter when families and individuals do need somewhere to go, and so that we can expand access to housing supports and permanent supportive housing,” said Mayor Bowser.

“Today marks another milestone in this work. This new shelter recognizes that not every person’s experience with homelessness is the same and it is designed to meet men where they are when they walk through the door. I am grateful for all the teams, service providers, and residents who came together to bring the vision for this shelter to life, and together, I know we will achieve what we set out to do: make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring.”
