Dear President Čaputová:
As the President of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs, a Taiwanese American organization that promotes freedom, human right and democracy for the people of Taiwan, I write to you today to express our wholehearted appreciation for the Slovakian government’s timely and generous vaccine donation to Taiwan, and by doing so, your support for Taiwan and its 23 million people.
Taiwan has been a model contributor to global health, having provided financial and technical assistance to respond to numerous global health challenges. Moreover, Taiwan had been successfully containing the pandemic for more than a year until mid-May 2021. Nevertheless, the recent outbreak clouded by threatening new variants and severe vaccine shortage means that international assistance to Taiwan is urgently needed, now more than ever.
Slovakia certainly does not forget its friends. In return for Taiwan’s donation of 700,000 masks last year when your country was in difficult times, Slovakia is now going to donate 10,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan, demonstrating the sincere friendship and goodwill between the two countries.
We thank the efforts by your government in donating vaccines to help protect the people of Taiwan from the deadly coronavirus. Earlier donations of vaccines from Japan, the United States and Lithuania were also a much-needed boost to fight against the pandemic, showing strong support for democratic Taiwan. All these vaccine donations are tremendously helpful in bridging the several-months gap in supply before Taiwan’s domestic vaccines become available and ready for use.
Slovakia and Taiwan have been maintaining close cooperation in many areas and sharing the common values of democracy, freedom and human rights. Last September, when China threatened against Czech Senate’s delegation to Taiwan, you ― as Slovakia President ― openly denounced China’s wolf warrior diplomacy and voiced support for the Czech Republic and Taiwan. Last October, Slovakia became the first EU member state to add Taiwan to its list of safe nations, allowing Taiwanese citizens to enter Slovakia restriction-free.
As Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen stated on June 6, “through cooperation with the United States, Japan and other countries, Taiwan will be able to overcome the immediate challenges . . . and move towards recovery.” It goes without saying that Slovakia deserves that respect and honor from Taiwan’s president as well.
With strong support from like-minded democracies like yours, Taiwan will be better prepared to face any challenge — be it the current pandemic or Chinese aggression — than ever before.
Thank you, President Čaputová, for your support for the people of Taiwan!
Minze Chien, National President
