Congressman Andy Barr

Operating as usual

09/01/2021

I want to thank all of our nation’s military servicemembers and veterans who served these past 20 years in Afghanistan. Your sacrifice made our country safer.

I also want to thank all of the servicemembers who persevered during a poorly planned and dangerous evacuation mission. The failures of the Biden Administration and our senior military leaders is not on you. All of you represent the very best our nation has to offer and we will forever be grateful for your service.

I was honored to attend last night’s opening event and I look forward to working together in the future to reduce addiction and save lives.

Blinken Confirms U.S. Left Hundreds of Americans Behind in Afghanistan

The Biden Administration says they only left about 200 Americans behind in Afghanistan. Biden claims these Americans wanted to stay in Afghanistan. But who thinks any American wanted to remain in a country run by brutal terrorists who hate Americans?

The Administration says they evacuated 6,000 Americans since Aug 15 when the Taliban took power but during that time estimates said between 10,000 and 15,000 Americans remained in country. It is a national disgrace that this President left Americans stranded behind enemy lines.

That is why as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I will not rest until we hold this Administration accountable and demand every American be rescued.

Around 6,000 'self-identified' Americans have left Afghanistan, Blinken said, with 'under 200' Americans 'who remain in Afghanistan and want to leave.'

Last year, overdose deaths rose by over 50% in Kentucky and almost 30% nationwide. On #InternationalOverdoseAwarenessDay, we must end the stigma of addiction and come together to support people in recovery and save lives.

Last week, The CAREER Act that I introduced and led to passage, helped deliver almost $2.5 million in federal funds to Isaiah House Treatment Center. The Shepherd’s House in #KY06 also received major federal grants this year. I will continue pushing for more resources in this fight.

Today is a Day to Remember: An estimated 93,000 people lost their lives to drug overdose in 2020. As this epidemic evolves, we’re learning more about how benzodiazepines are involved in the lives that we’ve lost to overdose.

If you find yourself or a loved one misusing prescription benzodiazepines or acquiring illicit benzodiazepines, then talk with a healthcare professional about managing or decreasing drug use. Learn more: https://go.usa.gov/xFtFU International Overdose Awareness Day

Today, @leadermcconnell and I announced a $2.3 million federal grant from the CARES Act to the Paris-Bourbon County Economic Development Authority.

This grant will expand access for freight traveling to the Paris-Bourbon County Industrial Park. The project is expected to create 296 jobs, retain 147 jobs, and generate $214 million in private investment. Amazing turnout today at the military service academy day in Lexington.

Proud of all of these students for their interest in attending military academies to serve as the next generation of leaders in the greatest military the world has ever known.

Let’s be clear: President Biden is to blame for yesterday’s deaths of 13 brave U.S. service-members at Hamid Karzai International Airport. He is responsible. Full stop. It didn’t have to happen. It was avoidable. Biden’s policy errors directly contributed to this tragedy.

For months, I urged the Administration not to give up Bagram Air Base, the most secure air base in the region. Instead, they gave it up before we even evacuated our people, our allies and our aircraft, vehicles, weapons and equipment. Now, we are trying to evacuate from the most dangerous airport in the world. Joe Biden’s incompetence is now literally killing Americans.

One of the most important roles a member of Congress has is to appoint extraordinary young students to attend military service academies to join the ranks of the world’s greatest military officers.

To that end, on Saturday, I am hosting Service Academy Day at the Aviation Museum of Kentucky (4029 Airport Road, Lexington, KY, 40510).

Check-in for students and families will begin at 8:30am, with presentations starting at 9:00am. I look forward to meeting the next group of #KY06 students wanting to serve our nation in uniform. Students interested in attending a service academy should attend.

Rep. Barr Statement on Afghanistan Bombings that Killed U.S. Military Service-Members

Today’s attacks in Afghanistan are tragic and horrific. Multiple U.S. military service-members gave the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that American citizens and our Afghan allies could escape the threat of the Taliban, ISIS, and other terrorist actors in the area. That is the legacy these American heroes will leave behind.

Isaiah House Treatment Center Remarks

Isaiah House Treatment Center continues to provide a roadmap and hope for Kentuckians struggling to overcome addiction. Over 6,000 Kentuckians will benefit from the almost $2.5 million federal grant provided today.

With overdose deaths rising in Kentucky by over 50% last year, we must move aggressively to provide resources to our frontline treatment and recovery providers.

That is why Senator Mitch McConnell and I supported this grant request and championed the CAREER Act, which made this grant possible. My partial remarks from today’s event ⬇️

Rep. Barr Blasts House Democrats’ Budget to Bankrupt America

As if President Biden abandoning thousands of U.S. citizens behind enemy lines in Afghanistan wasn’t bad enough, House Democrats are moving forward with their budget to bankrupt America.

Their budget proposal puts America on track for an average deficit of $1.6 trillion a year and $17 trillion in new debt over ten years.

Astonishingly, the Democrat spending spree flatlines defense and security spending, even though we face historic national security crises in Afghanistan and at the southern border. My full statement ⬇️

Mornings with Maria 8.24.21

Thousands of Americans are STRANDED behind enemy lines in Afghanistan and President Biden says he won’t extend military presence beyond August 31. This is disgraceful.

As I told Maria Bartiromo, the U.S. must do everything to bring these Americans home.

Today, the President’s National Security Team provided an unclassified briefing to Congress about Afghanistan. On the conference call, Secretary of State Blinken admitted that in mid-July he read the dissent cable sent by brave foreign service officers in the Kabul Embassy warning him and the President of the imminent failure of their strategy of unconditional retreat. Obviously, Secretary Blinken and President Biden completely ignored that warning. Another reason President Biden’s entire National Security team should resign IMMEDIATELY.

Varney & Co. Appearance 8/20

This Administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan left behind billions in weapons and equipment and has erased 20 years of progress in the war on terror. Biden’s national security team must resign. My comments on Varney & Co.

A tense couple hours on Capitol Hill. Grateful that my staff and others on the ground are safe. Thank you to all first responders who confronted today’s bomb threat at the Capitol.

We owe all our law enforcement personnel nationwide a debt of gratitude for the work they do to keep our communities safe.

Ingraham Angle Appearance

Biden’s Afghanistan disaster jeopardizes everything Americans fought and died for.

Last weekend was the largest jailbreak of jihadist terrorists in world history.

The Taliban now has our weapons to target Americans and our homeland.

Biden's entire national security team should resign: Rep. Andy Barr

After the Administration’s disastrous Afghanistan pullout, I am calling for the entire Biden national security team to resign. My partial statement ⬇️

I specifically, repeatedly and publicly called on the Administration to not abandon Bagram Air Base as part of its withdrawal strategy. Again, they ignored that warning. As a result, Afghanistan has descended into total chaos, with the Taliban taking control before we were able to remove all American citizens, our Afghan allies who risked their lives to fight alongside the United States, and all of our weapons, aircraft, vehicles and equipment from the country.

Now, because of this President’s incompetence and malfeasance, two decades of progress on the global war on terror has been erased, our homeland is less safe than it was on September 10, 2001, and there are already more U.S. boots on the ground in Afghanistan than there were when President Biden took office.

A prominent House Republican is calling for the resignations of every individual on President Biden's national security team as part of a reckoning for what he called its "disorderly retreat from Afghanistan."

Great event at University of Kentucky to announce a $14.5 million federal grant for the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging.

For over three decades, Sanders-Brown has been home to one of the premier research institutions in our country in the fight to defeat Alzheimers and other dementias.

I am proud to champion federal funding in support of the extraordinary work being done at UK’s Sanders-Brown and I look forward to supporting Sanders-Brown and their mission in the future.

Please see below for an update from the US Department of State should you or someone you know need assistance evacuating from Afghanistan:

US Citizens in Afghanistan

U.S. citizens needing assistance to depart Afghanistan should register for any option that might be identified to return to the United States by completing the below Repatriation Assistance Request for each traveler in their group as soon as possible, to facilitate travel when the situation permits. Spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens in Afghanistan who are awaiting immigrant visas should also complete this form if they wish to depart. Citizens must complete this form even if they’ve previously submitted their information to the U.S. Embassy in Kabul.

Applicants for Special Immigrant Visas

Applicants for Special Immigrant Visas notified of eligibility for travel to the United States through Operation Allies Refuge should wait for further instructions. Administrative processing of Special Immigrant Visas will continue, and applicants will continue to be notified about the status of their cases.

Constituents may contact my district office for assistance inquiring with the Department of State about their loved one currently in Afghanistan. In an effort to reduce any duplicate inquiries to the Department of State it is best to reach out to the office of only one Representative or Senator as duplicate inquiries will slow down response times.
